LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah held a 4-1 lead after five innings but saw Hawaii pull together a late-game rally to escape with the 5-4 win here in Utah's second game of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic.
The Utes, who slip to 3-4 on the year, let Hawaii belt out four of its six total hits after the sixth inning. Those four hits allowed the Rainbow Wahine to plate four runs to tie it in the sixth and win it in the eighth.
The Utes never trailed until its final at bat in the bottom of the eighth. They got an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Jessica Shiery. The hit to left field allowed Jackie Wong to score from third.
UH tied in the second but Wong gave Utah a three-run lead with one swing of the bat. With Andrea Hoffman and Meghan Crouse on board after a pair of walks, Wong hit only her second career home run to give the Utes what seemed to be a commanding three-run lead.
Wong led the Utes at the bat. She was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. The only other Ute to tally multi hits in the Hawaii game was Meghan Crouse. She was 2-for-2 with a run scored.
Lindsie Nielsen came on in relief of Meghan Dyer. Nielsen took over in the sixth inning and allowed only one unearned run and one hit. She fanned three batters.
Despite allowing four earned runs, Dyer struck out eight and only allowed five hits and one walk.
Utah returns to action on Saturday with a doublheader in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic. They play Cal-Poly and Illinois starting at 11:15 a.m. (PST)
