LAS VEGAS - The University of Utah softball team capitalized on a bases-loaded error as it scored five unanswered runs to race past the Wright State Raiders in its first game of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic on Friday morning.
The Utes (3-3 overall) scored four runs in the last two innings to steal the 5-1 victory away from WSU (0-1).
Andrea Hoffman plated the game-winner in starting a three-run, sixth-inning effort for the Utes. With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the frame, Hoffman hit a grounder with eyes between the third baseman and shortstop. It scored Devina Quintero and gave Utah the lead for good, 2-1.
The other two run in the sixth came on a throwing error. With the bases still loaded, Jackie Wong hit a grounder to the second baseman. She opted to go home with it, but threw it away. That allowed the other two runs (Sharee Fonoti and Hoffman) of the inning to score and gave Utah a 4-1 lead.
Jessica Shiery made it an insurmountable four-run lead in the seventh with a solo home run over the center field fence.
The Utes pounded out eight hits for the morning in plating its five runs.
The fresman duo of Shiery and Hoffman led the Utes as both were 2-fo-3 at the plate. Shiery had an RBI and two runs scored while Hoffman had an RBI and one run scored.
Karina Cannon improved to 2-0 on the year. She went the distance in holding the Raiders to a mere four hits. She fanned two batters but walked four.
The Raiders struck first when Amanda Cody hit a solo home run in the top of the first. After going down 1-2-3 in the first, Utah responded in the second.
With Shiery on third, Quintero hit a bunt single to second base. The slow-roller froze the defense and allowed Shiery to knot the game at one.
Jessie Granger takes the loss for Wright State. She falls to 0-1 for the year.
