QUICKLY
Up next for the No. 3-ranked and undefeated Utah gymnastics team (8-0) is Brigham Young (3-4) on Friday, Feb. 24 in Provo, Utah. The meet starts at 7 p.m. in the Marriott Center ... Utah is off to its best start since going 10-0 to open the 1999 season ... Live scoring, commentary and video streaming for the Utah-BYU meet can be found at UtahUtes.com ... The meet will also be televised live on KBYU.
RE-TAKE TWO?
If they perform well this Friday in Provo, the Utes could regain the No. 2 national ranking they held for four straight weeks before slipping to No. 3 in the February 20 poll--which is based on regional qualifying score (RQS) for the first time this season. Georgia is No. 1 with a 196.795 RQS, but mere percentage points separate the next three teams: No. 2 Florida (196.170), No. 3 Utah (196.120) and No. 4 Alabama (196.100). Of teams 2-4, only Utah has a chance to improve its RQS this week because Florida and Alabama are off. Complete national rankings can be found on page 3 of this release. The rankings will be based on RQS for the remainder of the regular season. The RQS is calculated by taking a team's six best regular season scores--three of which must have come on the road--then dropping the high score and averaging the remaining five scores.
UTE NOTES
Of Utah's eight wins, seven have come against teams currently ranked in the top 20: No. 6 UCLA, No. 8 Michigan, No. 10 Nebraska, No. 15 Arizona State, No. 20 Minnesota, No. 22 Southern Utah and No. 24 Utah State. Washington, ranked No. 18 when the Utes won in Seattle on Jan. 13, has dropped out of the top 25 ... Utah is 4-0 on the road this season ... Four victories last Friday allowed freshman Kristina Baskett to move into a the team victory lead with 10. Ute winners include: Baskett (10), Ashley Postell (9), Nicolle Ford (7), Gritt Hofmann (4) and Jessica Duke (1) ... Of the Ute starters, only Ford (24-24) is without a fall this year ... Freshman Nina Kim returned to the all-around lineup for the first time since the second meet of the season last Friday, and if her sore knee holds up, she could stay there. Kim, who fell in two previous floor ex attempts on Jan. 7 and 13, nailed a 9.825 routine against Minnesota to clinch her best all-around score--a 39.325 ... Gabriella Onodi has been battling illness in the last three weeks and sat out against Minnesota.
UTE RANKINGS
Sophomore All-American Ashley Postell is ranked No. 3 this week on the beam (9.875 regional qualifying score). Junior All-American Nicolle Ford is No. 4 on bars (9.895) and No. 7 on beam (9.84). Ford, who was No. 5 in the all-around just a week ago, has dropped out of those rankings because she has only five all-around results--not enough for a regional qualifying score. Freshman Kristina Baskett is No. 9 on bars (9.87) and No. 10 on floor (9.845). As a team, Utah is No. 3 on bars this week (49.125 RQS), No. 4 on beam (48.925), No. 5 on vault (49.160) and No. 6 on floor (49.010).
LAST WEEK
Freshmen Kristina Baskett and Nina Kim placed 1-2 in the all-around and Baskett won or tied for three individual event titles to lead Utah to a 196.650-193.400 victory over No. 20 Minnesota. A season-high crowd of 12,746 was in attendance for the meet, which was never in doubt after the Gophers fell off the bars three times in their opening event. Baskett tied for first on vault (9.85) and bars (9.90), and was the solo victor on the floor exercise (9.875). Tying Baskett for first on bars were Nina Kim and Nicolle Ford, while Gritt Hofmann and Ashley Postell tied for beam honors with a 9.925.

UTAH COACH Greg Marsden
Greg Marsden, the winnningest coach in collegiate gymnastics history, is in his 31st year at Utah. He is college gymnastics' only 800-win coach (834-142-5). In regular season competition, Marsden is 418-59-2. He has spent his entire career at Utah and has won 10 national championships, double that of any other coach. Four of those titles came in the '90s (1990, '92, '94, '95). Eighteen of his teams have placed in the top-three at the national championships, most recently in 2005 (third). Marsden is a seven-time National Coach of the Year recipient.
MARSDEN SAYS
"We need to go down there (Provo) and hit a clean meet. The purpose of this meet is to begin to prepare for the postseason now. To be clean on the road is a step we need to take. We've had four opportunities and haven't accomplished that yet. We have this meet on the road against BYU and only one more opportunity when we go to Florida in mid-March (before the postseason). I hope we can get Gabriella (Onodi) healthy. She's been sick now for almost a month. But, it's been good to see Nina (Kim) re-emerge as an all-arounder for us.
THIS IS THE PLACE
Utah has drawn crowds of more than 12,000 to all three of its home meets this season and is averaging 12,480. A season-high gathering of 12,746 watched Utah beat Minnesota on Feb. 17, while 12,563 came to the Utah State/Southern Utah meet on Jan. 27 and 12,131 to the Nebraska meet on Jan. 20. Utah owns every gymnastics attendance record and has averaged 10,533 fans per home meet for the past 14 years. The Utes have won 21 of the last 24 gymnastics attendance titles, including last year's, when they averaged 11,300 spectators to their six regular season home meets. It was the third-highest season attendance average in Utah and NCAA gymnastics history. Utah also holds seven of the top 10 single-meet attendance records, including the largest crowd ever to watch a collegiate gymnastics meet in the United States-15,238 vs. Cal State Fullerton in 1991.
