EL PASO, Texas - The University of Utah got everything it needed in the first inning and then rode the pitching styles of Meghan Dyer to put San Jose State away, 8-0, in five innings.
The Utes even out to 5-5 on the year as they win their first game of the UTEP Invitational. San Jose State slips to 4-5.
Dyer, who improves to 3-1 on the year, had a stellar outing in holding her opponents to a meager three hits. She struck out four and walked three in pitching all five innings. She faced 21 batters.
Utah scored all eight of its runs in the first inning. The flood gates opened on a bases-loaded single by Devina Quintero. Her hit allowed Jackie Wong to score, plating the game-winning RBI.
A pair of bases-loaded walks to Ivette Hernandez and Hailey Davenport gave Utah a 3-0 lead and a fielding error allowed Utah to build a 4-0 lead.
However, the most damage in the inning came from the bat of Andrea Hoffman. With the bases still loaded, Hoffman hit a double to center field, plating all three runners. Hoffman would also score on the play as she capitalized on one of the Spartans' four errors for the game. She was credited with three RBI on the play.
Three of Utah six hits came in the first frame. Six different Utes tallied hits on the day. But, the best line came from Hoffman who was 1-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored.
Utah returns to action later this evening when it plays Northern Colorado in its second game of the UTEP Invitational. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
