EL PASO, Texas - Pitcher Meghan Dyer tossed a perfect game in helping the University of Utah softball team (7-5 overall) bag two victories in the UTEP Invitational this evening.
It was a perfect evening as Utah won the nightcap over UTEP, 8-0, in six innings. Dyer was all the defense Utah needed against the Miners as she mowed down 11 batters and didn't allow a single base runner. She improves to 4-1 on the year.
However, Dyer's perfect outing shouldn't overshadow the effort Utah put into its 4-1 win over New Mexico State earlier today. Karina Cannon tossed a gem herself as she tallied the win by striking out six batters and allowing only three hit. She didn't walk a single opponent in seven innings of work.
The Utes banged out 10 hit in chalking up the three-run victory over the New Mexico State Aggies. They posted runs in each of the first three innings and hung another score on the board in the fifth. Jackie Wong led Utah past the Aggies in going 3-for-4 at the plate. RBI's went to each Jessica Shiery and Devina Quintero but it was Diana Phillips who did the most damage. She went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored two runs in the victory.
NMSU collected a meager three hits in tallying one run. The Aggies tried to mount a rally in the final inning and scored one run. But, they couldn't compensate for Utah's four-run lead.
Not only was Utah pitching on fire in game two against UTEP, but so was its offense. The Utes held a 2-0 lead after five innings but exploded for six runs in the sixth to run-rule the Miners.
Utah's offense centered around the efforts of Sharee Fonoti. She hit her second home run of the year, a three-run shot in the sixth. She finished the game going 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Phillips also had a decent night at the plate. She was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Utes finished with nine hits in the eight-run win. It was the Utes' second eight-run-rule win this season. They topped San Jose State, 8-0, in the first game of the UTEP Invitational on Friday.
Utah returns to action when it plays New Mexico State again in the final game of the UTEP Invitational on Sunday. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
