EL PASO, Texas - The University of Utah easily won its first three games of the UTEP Invitational. But, it also showed that it could win the tight ones by plating the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. It elevated Utah to a 2-1 victory over New Mexico State.
Jackie Wong plated the game-winning RBI in the team's final at-bat and helped Utah (8-5 overall) bag its fifth straight win. The Utes won the tournament with a 4-0 slate this weekend.
Wong was the standout on the afternoon, going 4-for-4 at the plate. She tallied a triple, an RBI and a run scored.
Staci Hemingway led the seventh off with a walk and moved to second on Hailey Davenport's sacrifice. Andrea Hoffman reached first on an error, allowing Wong to come to the plate with two on and one out. She hit a bounding ball over the second baseman's head into left-center field. It was enough to let Hemingway score and lift Utah to victory.
Karina Cannon got the nod in the circle but was relieved in the fifth by Meghan Dyer. Dyer gets the win as she went 3-0 on the weekend. She improves to 5-1 for the year.
Cannon tossed for five innings and struck out three, allowing one walk and three hits. Dyer came on in the sixth and fanned three opponents and didn't allow a hit or a walk.
Utah got on the board first in the bottom of the first. Wong had a leadoff triple and would score two batters later on Diana Phillips' sacrifice fly to center field.
An RBI single in the third allowed NMSU to tie it.
The Utes return to action next weekend when it plays at the Sunshine State Tournament in Tallahassee, Fla. Florida State University is the host of the tournament.
