This is the first time in Mountain West Conference history neither the two-, nor the three-seed advanced to the semifinals of the tournament.
It is the fourth time in seven years and the second straight season the three-seed has fallen in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Tournament.
Utah now has a perfect 6-0 record in the quarterfinals (received a bye in the 2001 tournament). The Utes have advanced to the Championship game the last two seasons.
Utah freshman center Luke Nevill posted his 17th double figure scoring game of the season in the first half with 16 first-half points. He ended the game with 29, surpassing his previous career-high of 21 vs Air Force, 2/18/06. Nevill also posted a double-double, adding 14 rebounds, the fourth double-double of his career.
BYU junior forward Keena Young and junior guard Rashaun Broadus combined to score the Cougars first nine points and 11 of their first 13 in the game.
Utah's Nevill and senior forward Bryant Markson combined to post 18 of the Utes first 22 points of the game.
Young scored 17 points in the game, the 16th time he has been in double figures this season.
Nevill broke the Mountain West Tournament record for points by a freshman with his 29, breaking the previous record of 25 held by Matt Nelson's vs. Utah in 2002. His 11 free throws made tie for the fourth most in a single-game in MWC Tournament history (11, Marcus Banks, UNLV vs. San Diego State, 2003). His 14 rebounds also tie for the fifth most in a tournament game and tie former teammate Andrew Bogut for the freshman record.
The 10 steals by BYU ties for the fourth most in a MWC Tournament single game, tying five other teams.
