FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of Utah softball team (14-9) raced out to 4-0 lead and curtailed a fifth-inning rally as it edged Cal State - Northridge in the consolation bracket of the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif., this afternoon.
The Utes banged out eight hits but capitalized on three Matador errors in racing out to 4-0, first-inning lead.
Three Utah hitters bagged a pair of hits on the day. Sharee Fonoti led the way with a 2-for-3 effort. Jackie Wong and Diana Phillips both went 2-for-4 with Phillips scoring a run.
Utah hurler Meghan Dyer got the win in improving to 8-2 on the year. She struck out 10 Matador batters in only walking one and allowing six hits. Lindsie Nielsen came on to pitch the last 2.1 innings to get the save.
A pair of home runs in the fifth plated all three of Northridge's runs. Sam Schroeder (7-6) gets the loss. She allowed eight hits and walked two Ute batters.
