FAST FACT
This marks the fifth straight year that Utah has opened the season against UCLA. The Utes have won the last three openers, while UCLA's most recent regular season win was back in 2003.
ALL-AMERICA SHOWDOWN
The Utah-UCLA meet will feature six All-Americans, two NCAA champions and two NCAA silver medalists. All-Americans for the Utes include senior captain Nicolle Ford, junior Ashley Postell and sophomore Kristina Baskett. Baskett was the 2006 NCAA uneven bars co-champion as a freshman and Postell was the 2006 NCAA all-around runner-up. UCLA's returning All-Americans are juniors Tasha and Jordan Schwikert and sophomore Kristina Comforte. Tasha Schwikert was the 2005 NCAA all-around champion and Comforte was the 2006 NCAA runner-up on the vault.
WHO'S WHO AT THE U.
Pre-meet introductions in the Huntsman Center will take on added significance in the early going this year, as freshmen comprise half of Utah's 12 member squad. While it is perhaps the most heralded freshman class in Utah history, most of the lineup positions this Friday will go to the six returners. Freshmen who will likely compete right out of the shoot are two-time German national champion Daria Bijak, who finished eighth in the world in the all-around in 2005, and Annie DiLuzio, a U.S. National Team member and one of the best vaulters in the world (she placed second on vault at the 2005 World Cup). Freshman Jamie Deetscreek is the alternate on vault, bars and beam, and redshirt freshman Beth Rizzo is next in line on the floor.
LINEUP LOOK
A heel injury to 10-time All-American Ashley Postell last Friday puts her status for the opener up in the air. Postell, who was unable to train the day after the injury, will compete in the all-around if she is healthy ... Junior Jessica Duke has impressed her way into the all-around lineup, where she will be joined by Nicolle Ford, Kristina Baskett and possibly Postell ... The surprise of the preseason camp was junior Katie Kivisto, who missed the last half of her sophomore campaign after undergoing surgery for a dislocated elbow. Kivisto was doing her best gymnastics as a collegian until she came down sick last week. She is tentatively slated to lead off Utah's floor lineup this Friday ... Freshman Daria Bijak underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on November 17 and will be limited to the uneven bars in the first meet. She has not trained vault since injuring the knee and has not resumed tumbling on floor or beam ... Annie DiLuzio will represent the freshman class on three events this week: vault, beam and floor ... Freshman Chelsey Coleman has left the team and the University.
