PROVO, Utah - University of Utah senior midfielder Melissa Crespo (Milpitas, Calif.) picked an opportune time to score her first goal of the season and record her first career game-winning goal.
Crespo found the back of the net on a header in the 60th minute at BYU's South Stadium, giving Utah a 1-0 victory over BYU Saturday night in Mountain West Conference action. The Utah victory pushed Utah's unbeaten streak to 11 games, while it was the first loss of the season for the Cougars.
BYU (11-1-2) out-shot Utah (9-2-3) in the first half, 6-3. But Ute sophomore goalkeeper Lynzee Lee (Kalispell, Mont.) made a pair of saves and kept the game scoreless going into the intermission.
The game remained scoreless early in the second half, when Utah was awarded a corner kick in the 60th minute. Junior Katy Reineke (Salt Lake City) tapped the ball in to sophomore Kelly Isleib (Park City, Utah) off the corner. Isleib then fired a hard cross into the box. Crespo went airborne, parallel to the ground, diving toward the ball six yards in front of the goal and heading it past BYU goalkeeper Erika Woodbury to put Utah out in front.
From there, the Lee and the Utah defense withstood a number of BYU charges. Lee made three second-half saves. The Ute defense, led by senior Kiley Jones (San Clemente, Calif.) and junior Amanda Sanchez (Sacramento, Calif.), turned away a number of other Cougar chances to preserve the victory.
The victory also gave Utah a win in the Deseret First Duel rivalry series between Utah and BYU.
Utah will be back in action again Thursday, hosting Air Force at Ute Field. Kickoff for the Utes vs. Falcons is slated for 7:30 p.m.
