Gael Mackie, a 2004 Canadian Olympian who signed a National Letter of Intent with Utah last April, could join the Utes in January, head coach Greg Marsden has learned.
Mackie originally planned to defer enrolling at the U. until fall of 2008 in order to train for the Beijing Olympic Games. However, a stress fracture in her leg prevented her from competing in the 2008 Canadian World Championships Trials. When Canada failed to qualify a team into the 2008 Olympics, it effectively ended her quest for a second Olympic berth.
Mackie, who has recovered from the injury and has resumed training, is on campus this week. She has finished her high school coursework, has been admitted to the University of Utah and is registered for classes. All she needs in order to join her new teammates after Christmas break is NCAA certification, which is currently in progress.
As a 16-year-old, Mackie competed for Canada at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Mackie's international portfolio also includes gold-medal performances in the all-around and on vault, bars and beam at the 2007 Friendship Classic, a fourth-place all-around showing and a bronze medal on the beam at the 2002 WOGA Classic, and a seventh-place all-around mark (the best by a Canadian) and a silver medal on the beam at the 2002 Pacific Alliance meet.
In 2003, Mackie won the Canadian Senior National all-around championship. She captured the junior national title the previous year. She also won junior national titles on vault and floor in 2002 and on vault in 2001, while placing second on bars in 2002. Mackie won Elite Canada championships on the uneven bars in 2002 and the balance beam in 2003.
