TAOS RIVER/RED RIVER, N.M. - Utah skiied to a fourth place finish at the UNM Invitational with a total of 439 points. Denver University won the event with 592.5 points. The RMISA-sanctioned event was the final tune-up before the start of the championship season which begins next week (Feb. 23-24) at the NCAA West Regional in Truckee, Calif.
Saturday featured the men's and women's slalom races in Taos River. The men's team was led by emerging sophomore Kyle Kung. Kung's time of 1:43.43 earned him a ninth place finish. Fellow Sophomore Scott Veenis took 10th (1:43.57) and senior Gaspar Perricone (1:43.82) placed 12th. Kyle Darling and Tague Thorson did not finish their second runs and were disqualified.
The women's team was paced by Chirine Njeim, whose time of 1:48.70 was good enough for 13th place. Joining Njeim in the top 20 were teamates Kimberly Stephens (14th, 1:49.23) and Chelsea Laswell (1:49.68).
Even Sletten continued his fast skiing of late, notching a fourth-place finish in the men's 10K skate with a time of 27:46.8, roughly 18 seconds behind champion Paul Schauer of Alaska-Anchorage. Casey Simons also finished in the top 15, placing 14th with a time of 28:52.0.
In the 5K women's skate, standout freshman Sarah MacCarthy paced the Utes with a time of 16:09.9 to finish 10th. Annalies Cook also placed in the top 20, finishing 16th with a time of 16:31.2.
"Even is really coming on, finishing fourth was big," said head coach Eli Brown. "Simons, MacCarthy and Sletten had their best skating race of the season today. Now it's time to taper our training back in preparation for the championship season."
The Nordic team was without Sara Schweiger, Snorri Einarsson and Fabian Figi, who stayed home to prepare for next week's NCAA West Regional.
