JACKSON, N.H. - Bitterly cold temperatures didn't stop the University of Utah from getting off to a blazing start at the NCAA Championships Wednesday. Freshman Snorri Einarsson led the Utes in the men's 10K freestyle, clocking a time of 25:21.6 to finish second in his first appearance at the NCAA Championships. Even Sletten cruised to a 10th place finish in 26:16.7 and Fabian Figi (13th) gave the team three skiers in the top 15.
"Our men's team was unbelieveable today," coach Eli Brown said. "They really rose to the occasion."
In the women's 5K skate, reliable sophomore Sara Schweiger placed fifth with a time 14:31.0 to pace Utah. Annalies Cook placed 29th with a time of 15:30.3.
"The women raced hard as well," coach Brown said. "It was great to see Sara have her best skate race of the year when it counted the most"
Utah currently occupies fourth place in the team standings with 143 points. Northern Michigan leads all schools after the first day of competition after capturing the top three finishes in the women's 5K skate.
Races will resume Thursday, with the men's and women's GS races in Attitash, N.H.
