THIS WEEK: TRAINING TIME
The Utes are looking to regroup and prepare for the championship season starting Feb. 23-24 at the NCAA Western Regionals in Truckee, Calif. The regional essentially serves as a qualifier for the NCAA Championships, held Mar. 7-10. Three skiers (male and female) can qualify for each discipline, making the maximum 12 skiers for each school. Due to recent rule changes, every individual score will be counted thus making qualifying a full team crucial to competing for the team championship.
"Nothing is more important to us at this point in the season than this event," head coach Eli Brown said. "That's the way we're looking at it and we hope to qualify an entire team."
Sophomore Scott Veenis will return to Truckee, Calif. where he was named the West Region's MVP last year as a freshman.
LAST WEEK: UNM INVITATIONAL
The University of Utah completed its regualr season Feb. 9-10 at the UNM Invitational in Taos River, N.M. The Utes finished fourth with 439 points and Denver University won the event with a score of 592.5 points.
Finishing strong for Utah was sophomore sensation Scott Veenis, whose time of 1:56.07 earned him fifth place in the giant slalom. Freshman phenom Tague Thorson also skied well, clocking a two-run time of 1:56.63 to finish ninth. Kyle Kung's time of 1:43.43 earned him a ninth place finish. The women downhillers were paced by sophomore Mikaela Grassl, who finished third in the women's GS with a combined time of 2:00.31. Close behind was two-time Olympian Chirine Njeim (sixth, 2:00.66).
In the men's 10K classic, former world junior champion Even Sletten had one of his best finishes of the season, finishing in 30:25.1 to take fifth place in the GS and fourth in the slalom. Senior Casey Simons enjoyed his best finish of the year, taking 13th with a time of 31:29.1. Sarah MacCarthy finished fifth (18:58.2) in the women's 5K classic and 10th in the women's 5K skate to lead Utah. Annalies Cook gave the team two top-ten finishers, placing seventh with a time of 1:05.5.
TAGUE, HE'S IT
University of Utah freshman skier Tague Thorson finished second in the combined standings at the World University Games in Torino, Italy. Thorson was the only US skier to finish in the top-10 in all three alpine events. Thorson placed ninth in the super G, sixth in the slalom and fourth in the giant slalom.
"I'm really proud of him," says coach Korencan. "He's maturing as a racer and really having a great season. Being the top American at a world event is a great accomplishment."
NEXT WEEK: NCAA WESTERN REGIONALS
The Utes will look forward to their biggest event of the season, as they attempt to qualify for the NCAA championships in March. The event will be held in Truckee, Calif., and will be hosted by the University of Nevada. Senior Gaspar Perricone will attempt to qualify for his fourth-consecutive NCAA Championship appearance.
