THE MEET
No. 2 Utah (3-0) hosts Minnesota (3-2) on Friday, Feb. 1 in the second-annual Short People Appreciation Night, starting at 7 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center. Life-sized cutouts of Utah's shortest gymnast - 5-foot senior Katie Kivisto - will be placed outside each entrance. Anyone shorter than the cutout will receive a free general admission ticket.
Tickets are also available for purchase. The meet will be televised tape delayed on KTVX-4 (Feb. 3, 11 a.m.), CSTV (Feb. 7, 6 p.m.) and The Mtn. (Feb. 7, 8 p.m.). All times are Mountain.
QUICK STICKS
Utah moved up one spot to No. 2 in the national rankings. Ahead of Utah is Georgia, a team the Utes beat on Jan. 11 ... Utah is 2-0 at home, with wins over Georgia and Nebraska ... Utah has averaged over 13,000 fans to its first two home meets ... The Utes scored a season-high 196.700 in a road victory over No. 20 Arizona State (195.625) last Friday ... Minnesota co-coaches Jim and Meg Stephenson assisted at Utah prior to taking the job with the Gophers. Jim was as an assistant coach for the Utes from 1989-92, while Meg served as a volunteer.
UTE NOTES
Senior All-American Ashley Postell has won all three all-around and balance beam competitions to date. Postell has won four straight beam competitions, dating back to her NCAA balance beam title last April. She has also won her last four all-around competitions, dating back to the 2007 NCAA Super Six ... Picking up their first wins as Utes last week were sophomores Daria Bijak (vault) and Stephanie Neff (floor) ... Bijak got her first crack at the all-around as a Ute and scored a 39.15 vs. Arizona State ... Ute winners this season: Postell (9), Kristina Baskett (2), Annie DiLuzio (1), Bijak (1) and Neff (1) ... Nina Kim's first bar routine of 2008 scored a 9.825 last Friday in Tempe, Ariz.
UTE RANKINGS
Utah is No. 2 in the new national rankings after three weeks at No. 3. The rankings are based on total season average through Feb. 11. No. 1 this week is Georgia (196.869), followed by Utah (196.475) and Florida (196.400). The complete top 25 can be found on page 3. Individually, defending NCAA balance beam champion Ashley Postell is ranked No. 1 on the beam (9.908 average), No. 3 in the all-around (39.442). Postell is tied for No. 6 on the uneven bars with Kristina Baskett (9.883). Daria Bijak (9.842) is tied for 10th on the beam and Annie DiLuzio (9.875) is tied for 11th on floor.
SERIES SHORTS
Utah leads the series 26-1, including a 10-0 mark in Salt Lake City. Minnesota's win came in 2000 at a quadrangular meet at Arizona State. The loss ignited the Utes, who closed the regular season with five straight dual meet wins, captured regionals in Minneapolis and placed second at the 2000 NCAA Championships ... Utah has a 20-1 regular season edge over the Gophers.
