FORT WORTH, Texas - The University of Utah volleyball team was led by 14 kills from Lori Baird in a 3-0 win at TCU (25-22, 25-23, 25-19) Thursday in the University Rec Center.
"It was a great team effort," head coach Beth Launiere said. "Everyone played their roles really well. Our outside hitters did a great job on the attack. Keisha [Fisher] did a great job passing and our middles were effective on the block."
Utah (10-4, 2-2 MWC) got a match-high 14 kills from Baird, who was the only player in double-digits in the match, hitting for .333 on 30 attempts with four attack errors. Baird also pitched in five blocks and two digs.
"[Baird] had a huge game," Launiere said. "To have 14 kills in three sets is really a good performance, and it was truly the product of everyone on the team doing their jobs."
Middle blocker Emillie Toone had eight kills on 14 attack attempts, without an attack error, for a team-high .571 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Cinthia Silva came through with seven digs and four kills.
The Utes outhit the Horned Frogs .255 to .123 and improved to 9-0 when winning the first set this season. Utah also outblocked TCU 12.5 to 5.
"We are really tall along the front line," Launiere said. "That physical advantage that we have over most teams really gives us an edge. It's up to us to just be consistent in it and tonight it really paid off. Chelsey [Sandburg] led the way for us and was really effective."
The setter duo of Stephanie Shardlow and Abby Simmons coordinated the Ute attack with 36 assists. Shardlow registered a team-high 21, while Simmons had 15.
Defensively, Sandburg had a match-high six blocks along the net, while Baird and Toone had five blocks apiece. Kathryn Haynie chipped in four blocks to go along with 10 digs.
Fisher came up with a match-high 17 digs and chipped in a team-high two service aces.
After battling to keep their edge through four ties in the first set, the Utes never trailed and opened up the match with a 25-22 win. Silva came through with all four of her kills in the match to go along with three digs, while Toone and Baird contributed three kills apiece. Fisher came through with six digs in the back row.
After settling into a 10-10 tie in the second set, the Utes asserted themselves by scoring three consecutive points to take a 13-10 lead they would never relinquish. Even after falling back into a 21-21 tie, the Utes took five of the next six points to clinch the set. Baird registered four kills on eight attempts for .250 hitting percentage in the set, with Haynie and Toone pounding down three kills apiece. Fisher came through with seven digs defensively for the Utes.
The third set followed in a similar fashion than the third set. Utah edged itself out to a 21-18 lead late in the set after a Sandberg kill, then went on another 3-0 run for a 24-18 lead. A Baird kill sealed the match at 25-19.
TCU (13-4, 2-2 MWC) was led by eight kills apiece from Nirelle Hampton and Lauren Otto. Katelyn Blackwood registered 16 digs, and Hampton also put up a match-high three service aces.
