SALT LAKE CITY - Kathryn Haynie surpassed 1,000 kills and the Utah volleyball team earned its fifth consecutive win of the season in a 3-0 victory (25-13, 25-14, 25-22) against UNLV Thursday at Crimson Court.
"We executed at a high level throughout the match," head coach Beth Launiere said. "The entire offense clicked. A lot of different people had impressive performances on the attack."
Haynie reached 1,000 kills for her career and led the way for the Utes with a match-high 11 kills on 24 swings for a season-high .375 hitting percentage. Haynie is the 11th member of Utah's exclusive 1,000-kill club, joining teammate Lori Baird. Baird and Haynie are the first pair of teammates in school history to simultaneously have more than 1,000 career kills. Haynie was the only player in double-figures in kills for the Utes and also chipped in five digs and three blocks.
"These milestones are just a tribute to [Haynie and Baird's] success and their value to this program," Launiere said. "They have been working hard for this team for four years and this is just a tribute to their success."
Utah (12-4, 4-2 MWC) outhit UNLV .368 to .123 for the match and held an 11-4 edge in blocks. Baird and Bartkowiak registered nine kills apiece, while Emillie Toone had eight.
"[Our effectiveness on offense] all started with defense," Launiere said. "We were able to disrupt UNLV's attack with our block and take the momentum early in the match.
Toone and Chelsey Sandberg led the way with a match-high six blocks apiece to go with Haynie's five. Cinthia Silva recorded a team-high with 10 digs, while libero Keisha Fisher registered seven.
The first set started with both teams trading points to a 7-7 tie, before the Utes scored three unanswered points to seize a 10-7 lead they would never relinquish. Baird and Haynie totaled four kills apiece to help the Utes outhit the Rebels .393-.031 en route to a 25-13 win.
Utah went out to a 12-8 lead in the second set and two consecutive kills by Baird extended the Utes' edge to 13-9. Utah went on to build a 12-point lead at 23-11 and would carry its momentum to a 25-14 second-set win. Haynie totaled four more kills on just seven attempts in the set.
The Utes were ahead by as many as four points at 21-17 in the third set, and maintained their edge for a 25-22 match-clinching victory. Haynie and Baird came through with three kills apiece to help the Utes clinch the victory.
The Utes gained their 100th win at Crimson Court since 2000, and are now 100-16 in that time frame.
Utah hosts San Diego State Saturday at 1 p.m., at Crimson Court.
