THE MEET
The No. 2-ranked Utah gymnastics team (5-0) heads Seattle for a dual meet with Washington (1-6) on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 4 p.m. PT (5 p.m. MT) in the Bank of America Arena. Live stats and commentary will be available at UtahUtes.com.
QUICK STICKS
Utah, which placed second at the last two NCAA Championships, is ranked second behind Georgia in the current national rankings. Utah beat Georgia on Jan. 11 ... A Ute has won 22 of the 25 event and all-around titles awarded so far this season, including all five beam, floor and all-around competitions ... the Utes have had just three falls in 120 total routines this season ... Kristina Baskett is returning to her home turf this weekend. The 2006 NCAA bar champion hails from nearby Normandy Park (Puget Sound Gymnastics Club) ... Utah is 2-0 on the road, with wins over Arizona State and Brigham Young.
GOOD ALL-AROUND
Utah has four all-arounders ranked in the nation's top 15 this week. Ashley Postell is No. 2 with a 39.531 average, Nina Kim is No. 5 (39.437), Daria Bijak is No. 12 (39.262) and Kristina Baskett is No. 13 (39.256). Their all-around bests this year are: Postell (39.80), Kristina Baskett (39.60), Nina Kim (39.55) and Daria Bijak (39.375).
UTE NOTES
Senior All-American Ashley Postell has won all five balance beam competitions this season. Dating back to her NCAA balance beam title last April, Postell has won six straight beam competitions. She has also won her last five all-around competitions, extending back to the 2007 NCAA Super Six (she did not compete in the all-around last week at BYU) ... Taking advantage of Postell's absence from the all-around lineup against BYU was sophomore Daria Bijak. Bijak won her first collegiate all-around title, scoring a career-high 39.375 to edge Nina Kim (39.325). The former two-time German national all-around champion also tied for first on bars and floor ... Postell plans to return to the all-around lineup this week after doing just two routines last week. She won both, scoring a 9.925 on vault and beam ... Sophomore Stephanie Neff, one of Utah's highest scorers on the floor exercise (9.85 average), is out indefinitely after suffering an injury to her Achilles on Feb. 4. An MRI disclosed no tear ... Annie DiLuzio returned to the floor lineup against BYU and tied for first place with Bijak and Beth Rizzo. DiLuzio has been resting a "hot spot" on her shin since the second meet of the year. DiLuzio, the 2007 NCAA vault runner-up, has competed on that event in all five meets ... Rizzo's tie for first on floor at BYU was her first career victory ... Ute winners this season: Postell (16), Kristina Baskett (4), DiLuzio (2), Bijak (4), Kim (1), Stephanie Neff (1) and Beth Rizzo (1). Postell is looking for career win No. 90 this Saturday.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
This marks the last week that the rankings are based on total season average. Beginning Feb. 18, the rankings will be determined by regional qualifying score. The latest rankings have Georgia at No. 1 (196.829 average), followed closely by Utah (196.775), Florida (196.517), Alabama (196.360) and Michigan (196.295). The complete top 25 can be found on page 3. Utah's best event rankings are on vault (No. 2, 49.225) and beam (No. 2, 49.160).
UTES IN THE RANKINGS
Utah has three gymnast ranked in the top 10 this week, led by 2007 NCAA balance beam champion Ashley Postell, who is ranked No. 1 on the beam (9.910 average), No. 2 in the all-around (39.531), No. 5 on the uneven bars (9.894) and No. 9 on vault (9.880). Kristina Baskett, is No. 4 on the bars (9.895) and Nina Kim is No. 5 in the all-around (39.437).
SERIES SHORTS
Utah leads the series with Washington 36-0-1 ... The Utes have won nine straight since tying the Huskies in Seattle back in 2001. Washington received a 10.0 on its final floor routine to grab a share of first ... Utah has a 9-0-1 lead in Bank of America Arena.
