THIS WEEK
The No. 2-ranked Utah gymnastics team has a busy week ahead - with two meets in three days, separated by a travel day. The Utes host Southern Utah (5-1) and Utah State (3-7) on Friday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m., then catch a flight to Los Angeles the next day. Utah will face No. 9-ranked and undefeated UCLA (11-0) on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion. UCLA has a meet at Arizona on Friday before hosting the Utes two days later.
QUICK STICKS
Utah, which placed second at the last two NCAA Championships, is ranked second behind Georgia in the current national rankings. Utah beat Georgia on Jan. 11 ... A Ute has won or shared in 27 of the 30 event and all-around titles awarded so far this season, including all six beam, floor and all-around competitions ... Utah has had just four falls in 144 total routines this season and has yet to count a fall in a meet ... Utah's all-arounders dropped out of the national rankings this week when the rankings moved to regional qualifying score. None of Utah's all-arounders has three road scores, which is part of the calculation for the RQS ... Utah's average home attendance at its three home meets is 12,126 ... The Utes are heading into a treacherous stretch of the season, starting with No. 9 ranked UCLA on Sunday. After hosting No. 8 Oregon State on Mar. 7, Utah has road meets with No. 3 Florida (Mar. 14) and No. 4 Michigan (Mar. 22).
UTE NOTES
Senior All-American Ashley Postell has won all six balance beam competitions this season. Dating back to her NCAA balance beam title last April, Postell has won seven straight beam competitions. She has also won all five all-arounds she's been in this year (she did not compete all-around against Brigham Young) and has a string of six all-around wins going back to the 2007 NCAA Super Six... 10 of the 12 Utes who have competed to count this season are without a fall: Postell (22-22), Kristina Baskett (22-22), Daria Bijak (21-21),
Kyndal Robarts (14-14), Annie DiLuzio (13-13), Jessica Duke (8-8), Katie Kivisto (8-8), Beth Rizzo (6-6), Stephanie Neff (4-4) and
Gael Mackie (1-1) ... All-arounder Nina Kim's sprained foot could keep her out of action for the second week in a row. Two who definitely will not be available are sophomore floor starter Neff (Achilles) and freshman Jacq Johnson (broken metatarsal). ... Ute winners this season: Postell (20), Baskett (5), Bijak (4), DiLuzio (2), Kim (1), Neff (1) and Rizzo (1). Postell now has 93 career wins, the third most in school history behind Missy Marlowe (98 from 1989-92) and Theresa Kulikowski (112 from 1999-2003). NATIONAL RANKINGS
Even with the switch to regional qualifying score as the basis for the national rankings, Utah remains No. 2 for the fourth straight week. Georgia stayed at No. 1 (196.870 RQS), Utah at No. 2 (196.645) and Florida at No. 3 (196.480). Michigan moved up to No. 4 (196.295) and Louisiana State (195.885) rounds out the top five. The complete top 25 can be found on page 3. Utah's best event ranking is on beam (No. 2, 49.105 RQS). Utah ranks third on the other three apparatus: vault (49.200), bars (49.175) and floor (49.165).
UTES IN THE RANKINGS
Defending NCAA balance beam champion Ashley Postell is ranked No. 1 in the nation on the balance beam this week with a 9.895 regional qualifying score. Postell, who has a 10.0 and a 9.975 on the vault this season, is ranked No. 7 on that event (9.875 RQS). Kristina Baskett, the 2006 NCAA uneven bar champion, is ranked No. 2 on the uneven bars (9.890) and is tied for 10th on the vault (9.860). Daria Bijak is tied for ninth on the beam (9.825) and 11th on bars (9.830).
