SALT LAKE CITY -
The No. 2 ranked Utah gymnastics team is hot on the heels of No. 1 ranked Georgia after its 197.450-195.825 win over UCLA in Los Angeles Sunday. Utah, which is off this week, trails the Bulldogs by just .025 in the new rankings (197.055-197.030).
At 9-0, Utah is one of just three undefeated teams in the nation. Number 4 Michigan (11-0), which Utah meets in Ann Arbor on Mar. 22, and No. 6 Oklahoma (14-0) are the other unbeatens remaining.
In the individual national rankings, Ute Ashley Postell is No. 1 this week in the all-around (39.620 regional qualifying score), on vault (9.94) and beam (9.915). Utah's super senior is tied for second on floor exercise (9.92) and is eighth on bars (9.88).
Close behind Postell is junior Kristina Baskett, who is tied for fourth in the all-around (39.375) and third on bars (9.91), while checking in at No. 7 on vault (9.90).
Postell, the 2007 NCAA balance beam champion and a two-time NCAA all-around runner-up, has been practically unbeatable this season. Her 29 individual wins include all seven all-arounds that she's competed, all eight beam routines, six floor wins, her last five vault competitions and three bar wins. Of the 30 routines Postell has performed, she has won or tied for 22. Her seven all-around wins brings her total to 29 - 11 shy of the school record of 40 set by Theresa Kulikowski back in 1999. Postell already holds the school record for most career all-around victories with 26 and her total career individual titles now stands at 102 - 10 behind the school record of 112 set by Kulikowski from 1999-2003.
Utah has topped 197.0 in four meets, with a season-best 197.75 against Minnesota on Feb. 1. The Utes are coming off their second 197-plus road score - a 197.45 at UCLA on Sunday. Utah achieved its latest 197.00 without the services of ace three-event freshman Kyndal Robarts, who is a 9.90 scorer on both vault and floor, and with all-arounder Nina Kim limited to one event. Robarts suffered a knee injury in Utah's home win on Feb. 22 and will see a doctor today. Kim missed the last two weeks of training and competition with a sprained foot before doing a beam routine at UCLA.
Big skills and consistency have been Utah's formula for success. The Utes have just four falls in 152 total routines, and 10 of the 12 Utes competing this season have yet to fall. Postell has made all 30 routines this season and has hit 48 straight routines dating back to last year. The school record for consecutive made routines is 63, held by Suzanne Metz (1994-95). Baskett is also 30-of-30 this season, while Daria Bijak is 29-of-29.
