SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah baseball team held Air Force Academy to one hit as it won its second straight game here at Franklin Covey Field this evening, 6-0.
Utah hurler Stephen Fife went the distance in tossing a one-hit shutout victory. The 6-3 righty struck out eight, and he walked one Falcon in the win. It's the first complete-game effort by a Utah (9-12, 2-2 Mountain West) pitcher this season.
"Stephen went after them today," said head coach Bill Kinneberg of his pitcher's performance tonight. "They made contact on him early in the ball game, but his breaking ball kept them on their heels, especially from the sixth inning on.
"His curve ball was changing directions on the batters, and that's what we want to see. Fife's breaking ball was as good as it's been all year."
Fife surrendered the lone base knock in the fourth inning when K.J. Randhawa hit a ball up the middle.
Utah smacked out 13 hits in the victory today. Cody Guymon led the Utes' offensive charge for Utah. He was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Dustin Hennis and Michael Beltran were both 2-for-4, and Hennis added two RBI. Jesse Shriner was 1-for-5 and he too had a pair of RBI.
"We spread the hits out," Kinneberg said. "We got hits throughout our lineup tonight. But, I thought that we could've executed a lot better than we did.
"It was a tough day to hit today. The wind was coming across the field and I think the right-handed hitters had problems with that at the plate."
Utah broke the scoreless tie in the fourth. The AFA shortstop mishandled Hennis' ball allowing him to reach first safely. The very next batter, Austin Jones, belted a double down the left field line, allowing Hennis to score while the fielder was busy plucking it from the corner of the ballpark.
Three more runs came in the fifth. Corey Shimada's one-out triple scored DC Legg, who reached on a one-out single. Shimada scored on Shriner's groundout, and Guymon, who was hit by a pitch, scored on Hennis' single to left field.
More insurance in the form of two more runs came in the seventh inning for Utah.
Colin Shepherd got the start for Air Force, and he is saddled with the loss in going 6.1 innings. He allowed nine hits and six runs (five earned).
The same two conference rivals do battle tomorrow afternoon. First pitch at Covey Field is set for 1 p.m.
