The First Pitch: Things to Know
- It's a quick trip down to Orem for the Utah baseball team on Tuesday as the Utes face Utah Valley in a non-conference matchup at UCCU Ballpark. Game time has been moved up to 1 p.m. MT due to anticipated weather.
- Utah is coming off a memorable Big 12 series win over Kansas State this past weekend at America First Ballpark. Though K-State came away with the series opener, the Utes grinded out a pair of victories on Saturday and Sunday, capped off both days by eighth-inning comebacks. Over the two wins, Utah combined for 11 eighth inning runs.
- Left fielder Jake Long also hit for the cycle in the rubber game, becoming the third Utah player in recorded history to accomplish the feat and first since 2005. Long went 5-for-6 on Sunday, clubbing two homers and finishing with four RBIs and three runs scored.
- Long comes into the week riding a 20-game hitting streak, the longest by a Utah player since 2011. He and Cameron Gurney have been key parts in the Utes' lineup and rank in the top eight in the Big 12 in batting average. Gurney (.406) sits seventh in the league with Long (.392) close behind.
- The Utes swept last season's home-and-home series between these clubs, taking a 13-5 contest in Orem on April 22 before knocking off the Wolverines 8-2 on May 6 at Smith's Ballpark in downtown SLC. A rematch between Utah and UVU is set for Tuesday night, April 22, at America First Ballpark--the Utes' new on-campus venue that debuted this season.
- The Utes are off to a 9-3 start in their new home. Utah swept a four-game series against Grand Canyon to open the new yard and shut out GCU in the first three games.
- Following Tuesday's game at UVU, the Utes will resume Big 12 Conference play with a series at Kansas. With a holiday weekend coming up, the series will run from Thursday to Saturday at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence, Kansas.
