BOZEMAN, Mont. - Eva Huckova's second-place finish in the women's giant slalom highlighted the second day of the NCAA Championships for the Utah ski team, as the Utes moved into second-place in the overall standings with a solid day on the alpine hill.
Huckova's All-America run marked Utah's first podium finish of the championships. She earned 38 points for the Utes.
Also scoring points in the women's GS was Mikaela Grassl, whose 14th-place run scored 26 points, and Chirine Njeim, who was 19th and earned 21 points. Utah's 85 points in the event placed them second for the event.
"We had a pretty good day," Director of Skiing Eli Brown said. "We are excited about Eva's finish. Mikael knocked the timing wand with her pole and she lost a second, but still had a good run."
On the men's side, Scott Veenis was the top finisher with an 11th-place run and 29 points. Thomas Zumbrunn finished 21st for 19 points while Tague Thorson scored 15 points with his 25th-place run.
"Scott ran the second-fastest time in his second run," Brown said. "Thomas also ran a good race."
Utah has 288 points for second-place overall. Denver leads after day two with 316.5 points. Colorado (282 points), Middlebury (279 points) and Dartmouth (267 points) round out the top five.
"We gained a little today and we hope to continue that tomorrow," Brown said.
Utah continues at Bozeman with the men's and women's Nordic classical races, held Friday, March 7.
