SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's basketball team (0-1) dropped its season opener to Idaho (1-0) Friday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center, 94-87. Utah had four players score in double-figures, led by redshirt freshman Jason Washburn's game-high 20 points, to go with seven rebounds, including five offensive boards.
Washburn, a seven-foot center making his first appearance as a Ute, went 8-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line. His 20 points are most score by a freshman since Stephen Weigh tallied 22 against Albany on Dec. 28, 2006. He also had one assist, blocked one shot and made one steal.
Freshman guard Marshall Henderson scored his 18 points on 5-of-14 shooting in his Utah debut, including 3-of-10 from three point range, and was 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. He also chipped in three rebound, two steals and one assist. The Utes also got double-digit efforts from junior guard Carlon Brown (12) and senior forward Kim Tillie (10).
Idaho was led by Steffan Johnson's 19 points, along with 16 from Mac Hopson and Jeff Ledbetter.
Idaho shot slightly better from the field than Utah, hitting on 31-of-63 (.492), to the Utes' 32-of-66 (.485). The Vandals knocked down 10-of-21 three-pointers, while Utah hit on 9-of-27. Utah was outrebounded in the contest, 40-34, while turnovers were even at 14 apiece.
The Utes also got a quality effort from sophomore center David Foster in his first action since 2006-07, as the returned LDS missionary scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds. Senior guard Luka Drca was one point and one assist shy of a double-double, recording nine of each.
Utah is back in action Wednesday, Nov. 18, as the Runnin' Utes host in-state rival Utah State at the Huntsman Center. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. MT.
