THIS WEEK
No. 1 ranked Utah (8-1) hosts No. 15 Michigan (12-2) on Friday, Feb. 20 in the Huntsman Center. The meet starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at UtahUtes.com, the Huntsman Center box office and by phone (801-581-UTIX). Live scores and free video streaming of the meet will be hosted by UtahUtes.com. The meet will be televised delayed on CW30 and The Mtn. (see side bar for more).
QUICK STICKS
Utah is ranked No. 1 for the third straight week ... Starting this week, the national rankings are based on Regional Qualifying Score (RQS), which is obtained by taking the six best scores (three of which must have come on the road), dropping the high score and then averaging the remaining five scores ... This Friday's meet will celebrate National Girls and Women's Sports month. Any youth in a competition uniform or warm-up will be admitted free ... Utah gymnastics alumni and their families will gather after the meet for a reception in the Huntsman Center ... The Utes are on a record-setting attendance pace, averaging 13,704 fans to their first three meets. The Utah (and NCAA) single-season attendance mark is 13,164, set in 1993 ... Utah leads the series with Michigan 20-10 overall and 8-2 in Salt Lake City. Utah has won the last five match-ups (see side bar for more).
UTE NOTES
Utah won't leave the state again until the postseason, hosting three straight meets and finishing regular season play with a road meet at Brigham Young ... Kristina Baskett earned career victory No. 70 last week at Nebraska ... Baskett has a team-high 17 wins this season. Other Ute victors in 2009 are Nina Kim (6), Annie DiLuzio (4), Daria Bijak (3), Jamie Deetscreek (2) and
Gael Mackie (1) ... Kim's all-around victory at Nebraska was the first all-around win of her career ... Utah went with five all-arounders last week at Nebraska: Nina Kim (39.500), Kristina Baskett (39.300), Jamie Deetscreek (39.225), Daria Bijak (39.225) and
Gael Mackie (38.500) ... Baskett and Deetscreek have gone all-around in all seven meets. Season all-around highs: Baskett (39.675), Deetscreek (39.50), Kim (39.50), Bijak (39.225) and Mackie (39.125)... On bars, Baskett has scored a 9.90 or better in six of seven meets ... Deetscreek is 28-28 in hit routines ... The Utes are ranked No. 1 in the nation on both vault (49.295 RQS) and floor (49.205). Utah is second on vault (49.270) and fifth on beam (49.015) ... Kristina Baskett is ranked No. 1 on vault (9.920 RQS) and is second on bars (9.920), third in the all-around (39.410) and seventh on floor (9.870). Utah has three gymnasts ranked in the top 10 on bars: Baskett at No. 2 (9.920), Daria Bijak at No. 4 (9.89) and
Gael Mackie at No. 10 (9.85). Other top 10 rankings for the Utes include: Nina Kim, No. 4 on beam (9.875); Annie DiLuzio, No. 5 on floor (9.875); and Jamie Deetscreek, No. 9 on beam (9.85) and No. 10 in the all-around (39.280).
LAST MEET
Nina Kim won her first career all-around title and Utah beat No. 12 Nebraska 196.525-195.725 in Lincoln, Neb. Kim clinched the victory for Utah by scoring a career-high 9.925 as the last competitor on the balance beam, ensuring the Utes would not have to count a fall. She won individual titles on beam and vault--tying for first on the vault with Kristina Baskett and Annie DiLuzio. Baskett also picked up a win on the uneven bars. Utah used five all-arounders in the meet and placed four (including a tie) in the top three: Kim (39.50), Baskett (39.30), Daria Bijak (39.225) and Jamie Deetscreek (39.225).
