THIS WEEK
No. 2 ranked Utah (9-1) takes a break from competition this week, returning to action on Friday, Mar. 6 against Arizona State in Salt Lake City. Tickets are available at UtahUtes.com, the Huntsman Center box office and by phone (801-581-UTIX). Live scores and free video streaming of the meet will be hosted by UtahUtes.com.
RANKING WRINKLE
After posting the best score in the nation on Feb. 20 - a 197.525, the Utes dropped in the national rankings from No. 1 to No. 2. Making the situation even stranger is that Utah was hurt in the rankings by its season-long consistency. The regional qualifying score (RQS) formula, which determines the rankings from Feb. 16-on, favors teams with low scores to drop, which Utah doesn't have. The RQS is obtained by taking the six best scores (three of which must have come on the road), dropping the high score and then averaging the remaining five scores.
QUICK STICKS
The Mar. 6 meet against ASU is the annual Short People Appreciation Night. Life-sized cutouts of 5-foot-1 senior Kristina Baskett will be placed outside the entries and anyone measuring shorter than the cutout will earn free admittance ... In addition, life-sized "growth chart" posters of Baskett will be given to the first 3,000 fans ... Women business owners in the state will be recognized at a pre-meet reception ... The Utes are on pace to break their own NCAA season attendance record. Utah is averaging 13,407 to its home meets--compared to the 13,164 average back in 1993.
