PROVO, Utah -
Utah gymnastics coach Greg Marsden worried after Tuesday's practice that his team wasn't in the right frame of mind for its final regular season meet at rival Brigham Young. By Thursday, he felt better and Friday he was a happy man when his Utes crushed the Cougars 197.800-192.725 in Provo. It was a season-high for the Utes and the second-best score in the nation this year.
Kristina Baskett won the all-around with a 39.650, Nina Kim took second with a 39.575 and Daria Bijak placed third with a career-best 39.525. In fourth was Jamie Deetscreek (39.350). Career bests were flying around, with Baskett (floor), Kim (vault), Bijak (all-around, vault, floor), Annie DiLuzio (floor) and Kyndal Robarts (beam) all setting or tying personal bests.
As a team, the Utes obliterated previous season bests in team total, vault (49.550) and floor (49.600).
Utah hit 24-of-24 routines on a night when everything seemed to go right. The Utes got off to a nice start, scoring a 49.375 on the bars to best the short-handed Cougars' 48.500 vault, where they competed just five gymnasts on vault. Utah's last five gymnasts scored a 9.85 or better, including 9.875s from Gael Mackie and Bijak and a 9.925 from Baskett.
Kim and Baskett both scored 9.95s in a beautiful Utah vault set that scored a season-best 49.550. They got plenty of help up front with a season-best 9.90 from lead-off Bijak and 9.875s from Robarts and DiLuzio. The Cougars dropped like flies off the bars, counting three falls in a 46.850 set, for a two-event total of 46.85. Utah's lead ballooned with its 98.925 halftime score.
The Utes played a game of "can you top this," on the floor exercise, smashing its season high of 48.425 set a month ago against Michigan by posting a 49.60. In what has to go down as one of the best floor sets in school history, three Utes scored career highs: Bijak (9.925), Baskett (9.95) and DiLuzio (9.975). The other two counting scores came from Kim and Robarts with 9.875s. Deetscreek's 9.85 leadoff routine was tossed. After three, the Utes led by a whopping 148.525-143.850.
While the Utes cooled off a bit on the beam, it wasn't by many degrees. Robarts set a career-best as the opening competitor with a 9.90 and Kim finished the set with a 9.90 to lead Utah to a 49.275.
