SALT LAKE CITY - Junior right hander Ashley Smuda allowed only one hit in 3.2 innings of work against San Diego State, but the University of Utah softball team still fell 3-0 to San Diego State in a Mountain West Conference game Friday at Salt Lake Community College Softball Field.
On the mound for Utah (17-24, 1-5 MWC), Smuda faced 14 Aztec hitters, only allowing one hit while striking out one and handing out one walk.
"Smuda threw the heck out of the ball for us today," Utah head coach Amy Hogue said. "She really came in and made a difference for us. Defensively and at the plate, [senior shortstop Sharee Fonoti] played the best game I have ever seen her play. Even though we didn't come up with the win today, I like our chances for tomorrow."
Fonoti was the only Ute with multiple hits on the day, going 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of singles in the third and fifth innings. The Ewa Beach, Hawaii native also had an outstanding day in the field as she was credited with four assists and three putouts.
The Utes totaled four hits on the day. Freshman third baseman Whitney Holm doubled down the right-field line in the first inning, but unfortunately, the Utes could not convert a score.
In the third inning, Fonoti led off with an infield single to second base. Fonoti reached base safely by virtue of a head-first slide into first base. Yet the Aztecs got a strikeout and Fonoti was thrown out stealing to put a halt to Utah's threat. With two down, senior first baseman Staci Hemingway drove the first pitch she saw over the left-field fence that barely hooked into foul play.
San Diego State (28-14, 5-1 MWC) got on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning when Tonye McCorkle led off the frame with a single then stole second base. Camello drove McCorkle in to break open the scoring for a 1-0 lead.
The Aztecs got two more runs in the fourth inning when Traci Wolf singled to left field and was advanced to second base after a sacrifice bunt by Monica Alnes. Jessica Camello then advanced Wolf to third base with a single through the right side. Camello then stole second and later scored with Wolf after Jen Wisneski came up with a two-RBI single to right-center field.
Utah is schedule to return to the friendly confines of Ute Softball Field to host the Aztecs Saturday at 1 p.m. The Huntsman Cancer Institute will be on site handing out information pamphlets about women's health. Cancer survivors will also be recognized in a special ceremony at halftime of all of these events.
