BOZEMAN, Mont. - The Utah ski team struggled during the first day of the Montana State Invitational with the Nordic team battling illness and the alpine squad challenged by the mountain in their RMISA giant slalom qualifier on Friday.
Despite the challenges, several skiers had solid finishes. In the men's 15-km classic, Didrik Smith finished ninth in 44:41.96 while Miles Havlick was 11th in his first collegiate race in 44:53.51. The Utes third scorer was Rolf Figi, who placed 18th with a time of 46:04.05.
On the women's side, Sarah MacCarthy had a top-10 finish in the 10-km classic, placing ninth in 34:39.23. Zoe Roy was 16th with a time of 35:25.24 and Karina Smith rounded out the Ute scorers with a 25th-place finish (37:46.80).
"Half the team is sick right now, so it was an okay day with what we have," Director of Skiing Eli Brown said. "Some of our skiers didn't start, and maybe some of them shouldn't have. We'll see who is healthy tomorrow. I am psyched how well Didrik and Sarah raced, and I am really excited about Miles. That is an awesome finish for his first college race."
The Utes are sixth after the first day of the invitational with 159 points. Colorado (245), New Mexico (203) and Denver (190) are first, second, and third, respectively.
In the RMISA giant slalom qualifier (which does not count towards the scores of the MSU Invite) the men placed four skiers in the top 15, led by an eighth-place finish from Ryan Wilson. Wilson finished with a time of 1:47.79. Thomas Zumbrunn was 10th in 1:47.83, followed by Kyle Kung in 12th (1:47.95) and Nick Cohee in 13th (1:48.06).
In the women's race, Eva Huckova continued her strong start with an eighth-place run in 1:51.20. Anna Kocken was 16th with a time of 1:52.93.
"We struggled a bit on the flatter hill, but we improved on the second run," Brown said. "Tomorrow will be a better day for us."
The MSU invite continues on Saturday, Jan. 16, with the 5- and 10-km freestyle and the men's and women's giant slalom races.
