OGDEN - Karolina Bartkowiak posted a match-high 14 kills with a season-high .700 hitting percentage while Morgan Odale had 12 kills as the University of Utah volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep over Weber State (26-24, 26-24, 25-14) in a non-conference contest Saturday at Swenson Gymnasium.
Utah (13-12) outhit Weber State .378 to .248 in the match and held a 45-26 edge in digs as well as a 7-5 advantage in team blocks.
"Everyone came to play," Utah head coach Beth Launiere said. "It just took us a little while to adjust to Weber State's style. We did that and everyone was sharp and played well. Stephanie [Neeley] played well and McKenzie [Odale] came in and did a nice job for us and made some good choices and sets."
Bartkowiak needed 20 swings to record 14 kills for a .700 hitting percentage. She also had seven digs, four blocks and a pair of service aces.
Odale notched 12 kills and also contributed four digs and two blocks.
Danielle Killpack led the Ute defense at the net with six blocks.
Neeley dished out 36 assists and is currently fifth in school history now has 2,854 career assists.
Keisha Fisher collected a match-high 14 digs against the Wildcats and now has 1,508 career digs, which leaves her only 63 shy of tying Connie Dangerfield (2003-07) for the school record. She has topped double-figures in digs in 23 of 25 matches this season and 83 times over her career.
The first set was tied three times before Weber State strung together three consecutive points to assume a 6-3 lead. The Wildcats led by as many as six (13-7) before Utah went on a 5-1 run to cut its deficit to two points at 14-12. Trailing 18-14, Utah pieced together a 7-1 run to take its first lead at 21-19. WSU would fight back to tie the set four more times before a serving error by the Wildcats and an Odale service ace gave the Utes a 26-24 victory to open the match. Odale and Redd both tallied four kills apiece and Killpack had four blocks during the opener.
"I told the team that good teams respond to what their opponents are doing," Launiere said. "It took us a little time to do that but we eventually adjusted. [Weber State] wasn't hitting the ball straight down. They were hitting deep and flat. We just had to adjust our defense. We improved in the second set and did a nice job in the third set.
"We kept everyone deeper defensively and handled their shots and rolls better, their off-speed stuff," Launiere said. "We dug more of their deeper attempts. We were flying in toward the net early in the match and they were hitting us high so we just needed to stay deep."
Utah inched out to a 4-3 lead early in the second set before putting together a 10-3 stretch to build its lead to eight points, 14-6. Weber State worked to knot the set for the second time, at 22-22, via an 11-5 spurt. The set would be tied on two more occasions before consecutive kills by Bartkowiak and Brooke McAlister led to Utah's second consecutive 26-24 victory. The Utes outhit the Wildcats .348 to .297 in the second set as Bartkowiak turned in four more kills and Fisher had four digs in the frame. Utah never trailed in the set and held a 2-1 edge in team blocks in the set.
Weber State took the first two points of the third set but Utah responded swiftly by taking the next five to take a commanding 5-2 lead. The Utes would build their lead to as many as 11 points (20-9) en route to a 25-14 match-clinching victory. Bartkowiak finished strong with six kills as the Utes outhit the Wildcats .438 to .097.
"We've been working hard this week at playing with a higher level of execution and staying more consistent," Launiere said. "Sometimes we make big, impressive plays but then we'll have a few unforced errors. We cleaned that up as the match went on as well.
"It's fun to play in-state matches. Weber State has some players on their side from the state of Utah and we have a lot of fans in this area so it's nice to play up here [in Ogden]. It was fun tonight."
Weber State (3-24) was led by 12 kills from Bethany Wray while Carissa Noble posted a team-high five blocks.
The Utes hit the road for a pair of Mountain West Conference matches this week. Utah will take on Air Force Thursday (7 p.m. MT) and then travel to UNLV for a match on Saturday (1 p.m. PT).
