RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The University of Utah softball team was swept in a doubleheader at UC Riverside Tuesday afternoon at Amy S. Harrison Field, dropping 5-3 and 7-3 decisions to the Highlanders.
UC Riverside def. Utah, 5-3
The Utes (12-15) scored one run in the first, third, and fifth innings. Foster walked in the first inning then stole second and was eventually pushed across the plate by an RBI single up the middle by Tia Palauni. Freshman shortstop Kelsi Hoopiiaina led off the third inning with a double down the right-field line and was knocked in by an RBI single to right-center field to score Foster. Brooke Olson led off the fifth frame with a single to center field and scored Utah's third run of the game after a fielder's choice by Jasey Jensen.
Unfortunately, the Highlanders struck with a cluster of runs, scoring four times on two hits and one error then added a fifth run in the fourth.
Senior right-hander Ashley Smuda fell to 10-6 this year with the loss, allowing four runs in 1.0 innings.
UC Riverside def. Utah, 7-3
In the second game, the Utes scored one run in the top of the first inning. Foster then drew a two-out walk and eventually scored after another single by Palauni.
Utah scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Olson singled to begin the fifth then scored after Hoopiiaina doubled to center field. In the sixth inning, Lindsey Palmer reached with a two-out single and was driven in by a double to center field by Olson.
Unfortunately, the Highlanders countered with two runs in their first at-bat and added five runs in the second inning.
Junior Brittany Parker allowed seven runs in 1.2 innings on six hits while giving out two walks and striking out one.
Utah will face Cal State Northridge Thursday at 12 and 2 p.m. PT.
