SALT LAKE CITY - Final Stats
Quotes
The streak is safe for another year. The Utah gymnasts scored a 196.900 to place second behind Florida in the NCAA Salt Lake City Regional and advance to the NCAA Championships. Utah becomes the only gymnastics team in the nation to qualify for all 29 NCAA Championships to date and has made the national championships all 35 years of its existence. The NCAA Championships will be held in Gainesville, Fla., on April 22-24.
Here were the final team standings at the Salt Lake City Regional: 1. Florida 197.675, 2. Utah 196.900, Denver 196.175, Boise State 195.950, Washington 195.075, Auburn 194.925.
Storylines were plenty, not the least of which was junior Kyndal Robarts. Robarts sprained her ankle in practice on Thursday and the medical staff said she would not be able to go all-around, and maybe not at all, just yesterday.
"We told (athletic trainer) Tom Iriye he had 49 hours to get Kyndal ready," said co-coach Megan Marsden about the injury. "He did it. She is just so tough and it helped rally the troops when Kyndal gutted it out." Added co-coach Greg Marsden, "We had three different lineups written out, depending on what Kyndal thought she could do. It was a real morale boost when she came out (and competed) on floor."
Robarts was phenomenal, scoring a 39.450 to place second in the all-around and also placing second on the balance beam by scoring a career-high 9.925 for the second straight week.
Utah's four seniors also put on a show in their last meet in the Huntsman Center. Jamie Deetscreek scored a 39.35 in the all-around--her second-best score of the year and her best since the second week of the season. Annie DiLuzio starred in a three-event role, scoring a 9.90 on both vault and floor and a 9.825 on beam. Daria Bijak started her meet with a fall on floor, but quickly recovered, tying for first on bars with a 9.90 and scoring a 9.90 on beam and 9.825 on vault. Beth Rizzo, recently returned from injury, tied her season-high on floor with a 9.80 and approached her season vault best with a 9.80.
Underclass storylines in addition to Robarts' amazing return came from Cortni Beers (9.75 on bars, 9.80 on beam) and Stephanie McAllister (39.150 in the all-around). Beers had fallen in three of her last four routines entering regionals and had originally been pulled from both lineups. McAllister separated her shoulder two weeks ago, yet tied her career-high on floor (9.85). Gael Mackie, who missed three meets earlier in the season with an injury, scored a 9.85 on the bars.
Utah will learn is session and seeding in the NCAA Championships on Monday. The Utes will be joined by Oklahoma, LSU, Stanford, Michigan, Alabama, Nebraska, Oregon State, Missouri, UCLA, Arkansas and host Florida at the NCAA Championships in Gainesville, Fla., April 22-24.
