TAYLORSVILLE, Utah - Leadoff hitter Brooke Olson went 2-for-3 at the plate but the University of Utah softball team fell to Colorado State, 16-2, in a Mountain West Conference game Saturday at Salt Lake Community College's Bruin Field.
Utah (24-25, 4-7 MWC) had three different players get hits, but the Ute defense could not contain the Rams' big innings. Kara Foster and Joni Cook were both 1-of-2 on the day, while Kelsi Hoopiiaina was credited with her 24th RBI of the year.
Ashley Smuda got the start in the circle for the Utes, going 2.2 innings while allowing five earned runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks. Smuda fell to 19-13 in 32 decisions this season. Cook and Brittany Parker both made appearances in relief for Utah.
Colorado State scored at least one run in the first four innings, including eight runs in the first frame and six in the third.
Utah scored two runs in their fourth at-bat. Clements led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch then Foster singled through the left side of the Ram defense. Both Clements and Foster advanced one base after Cook slapped a single up the middle. Hoopiiaina drove Clements in from third base by hitting into a fielder's choice and Foster came across the plate when Colorado State's Kelli Eubanks threw a wild pitch.
Despite the loss, the Utes have won seven of their last 11 games.
The Utes head to Las Vegas to face UNLV Thursday at 6 p.m. PT.
