LAS VEGAS - Junior pitcher Brittany Parker hit a two-out grand slam in the fourth inning but the University of Utah softball team lost 13-5 to UNLV in five innings Thursday in a Mountain West Conference game at Eller Media Stadium.
Utah (24-26, 4-8 MWC) got hits from six different players, led by Parker who went 1-for-2 at the plate with four RBI. Brooke Olson, Whitney Holm, Joni Cook, Tia Palauni and Lindsey Palmer each had one hit apiece.
Parker also started in the circle for the Utes, going 3.1 innings while allowing nine earned runs on seven hits with eight walks. Cook came on for the final 0.2 innings and allowed two earned runs on two hits.
The Rebels manufactured four runs in the first inning as Ashli Holland drew a leadoff walk then Paige Emerson singled up the middle before Holland scored the first run of the game on a Ute throwing error. Kendall Fearn drew a walk as well and Marissa Nichols reached on an error that allowed Emerson to plate the second run of the frame. Tayler Aleman then knocked an RBI single to left field to score Fearn and a two-out wild pitch allowed Nichols to put UNLV's fourth run on the board.
In the top of the second inning, the Utes loaded bases with Holm knocking a single over the Rebel shortstop, Cook singled up the middle and Palmer reached on a UNLV miscue. Then with two outs, Parker hit a grand slam to tie the game at four runs apiece in the top of the second inning. This was Parker's first home run of the season and she now has four RBI in 2010.
Hannah Clements was hit by a pitch to start the third inning then advanced to second on a ground ball and put the go-ahead run in scoring position on a wild pitch with one out in the third inning. Clements gave the Utes a lead as there was a passed ball given up by the Rebels as Holm drew a walk.
UNLV (29-19, 8-2 MWC) came back to tie the game with a single run in the third inning, starting with a single up the middle by Aleman then a Ute fielding error allowed her to score from second base.
Unfortunately, the Rebels put up eight runs in the fourth inning to put the run-rule into effect.
The Utes begin their two-game set at San Diego State tomorrow at 6 p.m. PT. Live stats for both games can be found at goaztecs.com.
