SALT LAKE CITY - Junior wing Will Clyburn posted his seventh double-double this season but the University of Utah men's basketball team (10-11, 3-4 MWC) lost to Colorado State (15-6, 5-2 MWC), 74-68, in a Mountain West Conference game Saturday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
The Utes outshot the Rams, 46.7% (28-of-60) to 45.2% (28-of-62) with Utah dishing out 15 assists, compared to 14 for CSU. Points in the paint were even between the teams at 30 points apiece.
Clyburn registered his seventh double-double this season with a team-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. He had an impressive second-half performance 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Clyburn contributed on the glass in the first half with seven boards during the first frame. The Detroit, Mich., native has hit double-digits in points in 20 of 21 games this season.
J.J. O'Brien and Josh Watkins scored 11 points apiece. Watkins pulled down a career-high seven rebounds while O'Brien tied his career high with three assists.
Chris Kupets and Jason Washburn both totaled nine points apiece. Washburn hit four of his six shots from the floor and also posted a team-high three steals, which was a career-high mark. Shawn Glover hit his first two shots of the ballgame and ended with five points.
With four blocks today, Foster's career mark increased to 184, just 21 rejections from tying Luke Nevill's Utah record of 205 from 2005-09.
Neither team could build a substantial lead in the first half as neither side led by more than six points. To start the game, the Utes made five of their first seven shots from the floor, including a 4-for-5 start from 3-point range. Utah was down 12-7 and used a 9-2 run to take a 16-14 lead. The Rams regained the lead at 19-16 and would push their lead to as many as six points (31-25) before a furious 7-0 Ute run gave them the lead back at 32-31. CSU finished the half strong by scoring nine of the final 13 points to take a 40-36 lead into the locker room. Utah shot for a 51.7% (15-of-29) from the floor in the half, while CSU managed to put together a 44.1% (15-of-34) effort. Three Utes posted seven-point performances, including Kupets, Watkins, and Washburn.
The Rams began the second half with a 15-6 stretch to assume its largest lead of the contest up to that point, an 11-point lead at 55-44. The Utes responded with a 7-2 spurt to climb back within six points (57-51), but CSU regained its double-digit lead by taking seven of the next nine points for 64-53 advantage. Utah rattled off six consecutive points to come within five of CSU (64-59) then tied the game at 68-68 after a separate 9-2 stretch. Unfortunately, the Rams took the last six points of the contest for a 74-68 victory.
Colorado State was led by Andy Ogide, who tallied 28 points, including a 3-of-4 mark from 3-point territory, and pulled down 10 rebounds.
Utah celebrated the 50th anniversary of the 1960-61 Final Four team with a halftime ceremony. The Utes also participated in the Coaches vs. Cancer weekend, as the coaching staff wore sneakers with their suits.
The Utes travel to Las Vegas to face the Runnin' Rebels Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. MT. The game will be aired live on VERSUS.
