Utah Head Coach Jim Boylen
"I think in our nine losses we have played 32 to 34 (good) minutes. And we have had six to eight minutes where we have been out-played and didn't execute, and didn't guard. That is where this team is at right now. I said this to the team, `We are in a situation where we get stung by a run.' We missed a layup at the rim, they came down and made a three. We got stung in a run and didn't react very well. After we got stung in the run, we stopped sharing it and moving it and you saw what happened in the game, the game separated. We have to handle it better in the second half when a team makes a run. The game was six, I think at that time, and we were right there. That is where this team has to grow. It has to learn and grow. I have some guys that want to do it so bad that when that team makes the run, they try to do it on their own. And we have coached it and talked about it and we are going to keep working on it. We have to play a complete game."
On the play of junior center David Foster
"I am excited about David Foster. I thought he was back to a little bit of who he is. That was encouraging for me. He had a couple plays he could have made, didn't score a whole bunch, but I thought he effected the game. When David is in the game our defensive field goal percentage is 38 percent, when he is not in the game, it's about 47 percent. So obviously he is a big part of what we have and I think he is on the comeback trail and I am excited."
On the play of freshman wing J.J. O'Brien
"We saw some glimpses of what J.J O'Brien can be, a multiple ball handler, a big wing. For a freshman against that team to get 10 boards says a lot and I am encouraged the way he played."
Junior wing Will Clyburn
"Towards the end of the game is when we got to figure it out and start moving the ball. We started doing it ourselves and every time it bit us in the butt. We stopped moving the ball in the second half and we stopped passing. We were getting great shots in the first half, moving the ball and making those passes. In the second half, it was one dribble, then a shot. Just doing it ourselves, so of course our shooting percentage went down, we were trying to go one against five basically. Coming into the game, I thought it was going to be a close game. I knew we had to play all out, and play a whole 40 minutes. It is encouraging though that we stuck with them for that long."
Junior guard Josh Watkins
"It was a great game. Will had a terrific game and Dave was tough today. We just have to play 40 minutes. I feel that we are a great team, we are right there. We can beat anybody in the nation; we just have to come together at the end of the game. That is all there is to it, just come together and still share the ball, and we are right there with anybody in the country. We felt we had to be aggressive tonight and get some of their guys in foul trouble and go to the line so we can set up our press and our defense."
Junior center David Foster
On the team's progress
"We are right there, just like Will and Jiggy said. We are real close, we just have to make sure we trust each other for a full 40 minutes. At times we tend not to trust each other and we need to make sure we get the crucial balls on the defensive end, and we are right there, breaking through like Coach Boylen said. So we just have to continue to trust our teammates and trust our coaching staff."
SDSU Head Coach Steve Fisher
"Sometimes when we got a shot, we got a second shot. Even a bad shot is a good shot when you're looking at the alternative. We did a better job."
"We got frustrated in the first half with ourselves, the officials and turnovers. You can't do that. You can't play that way. We had a lot of emotions showing and we talked about that at halftime. `Leave it in the locker room. Forgive yourself, forgive your teammate, forgive me for yelling at you, but don't forget how you made the turnovers and don't have them in the second half.' We were much more composed and played the way we should play."
"Runs will be harder in conference than they were in non-conference. We had a couple of spurts where we created separation. On one, they came right back on us. That was somewhat created by offensive rebounding. We couldn't keep Josh Watkins out of the paint and he created a lot of misery for us, both directly with 24 points and indirectly when he got in there to pull it up with helpers to put it in. We had a hard time handling his dribbled penetration. He's good. He made some plays. We have to do a better job, but he's a good player. He does that against everybody."
"He's not our best player, but DJ Gay is our most important player. He personifies playing flat line, not getting to high, not getting to low when you miss three in a row, not worrying when you make a mistake, and not living on that last play but dealing with the next play."
