Watkins got going early, scoring Utah's first nine points of the opening half, but SDCC poured in eight straight to lead 10-5 before a four-point play by Watkins led an 8-0 run that gave the Utes a 13-10 edge. Utah led 19-16 before the Hawks jumped to a 27-21 lead with an 11-2 spurt. Utah countered with eight straight to regain the lead at 28-27 and would take a 30-29 lead into halftime, paced by a game-high 14 points from Watkins on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor. He also dished out three assists in the opening half.
Utah stretched its lead to as many as four (39-35) early in the second half as Watkins hit three of his four field goal attempts. SDCC erased its deficit with four consecutive points to force the sixth tie of the game at 41-41. The Utes were able to push their advantage up to six (47-41) with two free throws by Storey, a lay-in by Cedric Martin and a jump hook by Washburn.
