SALT LAKE CITY - Senior guard Josh Watkins hit a game-high 22 points, but the University of Utah men's basketball team lost to Montana State, 70-64, in a non-conference game Saturday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Utah (1-2) knocked down 45.5% of its shots from the floor, compared to a 51.7% mark for Montana State (2-1). The Utes set a new season high with seven 3-point field goals on 17 attempts to go along with a season-high 14 assists.
Four Utes recorded double-figures in points, led by Watkins, who turned in his seventh career 20-point game and his second this season. The New York, N.Y., native hit eight of 15 shots from the floor while dishing out four assists and grabbing four rebounds. Watkins has had nine straight games with 10 points or more. He started 2-of-6 from the field until the under-4-minute timeout in the first half, but then hit four of his next five shots to find his rhythm.
Junior wing Cedric Martin poured in a career-high 11 points versus MSU. He connected on two of his first three field goal attempts and finished 4-of-9 for the game to go along with four assists. His first 3-pointer of the season gave Utah its first lead of the game and he would connect on three of his four shots from long range on the afternoon.
Junior guard Chris Hines hit four of his first five shots for 10 points and his ninth career double-figure-point effort. He also grabbed four rebounds.
Junior center Jason Washburn registered four field goals on six shots and also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
The Bobcats hit three of their first four shots and raced out to a 9-0 lead. Down 15-6, Utah responded with a 9-2 run, including seven points by Hines and a long-distance jumper by Dijon Farr, to bring the Utes within two (17-15). Hines' second 3-pointer tied the game for the first time at 20-20, then a 3-pointer by Martin gave the Utes their first lead of the day, 23-22. A Washburn jam tied the game for the second time (25-25) before a Watkins' 3-pointer regained the lead for Utah, 28-27.
The Utes pushed their lead to as many as four (31-27), but the Bobcats quickly erased the deficit with four straight. An old-fashioned 3-point play by MSU's Tre Johnson gave the Bobcats a 34-31 lead at the break. Utah shot 46.2% from floor, led by 10 points from Hines on a 4-of-7 effort from the floor, while Montana State went for 51.7%. The Utes hit 50.0% (4-of-8) from 3-point territory, led by Hines' 2-of-3 effort, compared to a 22.2% (2-of-9) mark for the Bobcats. Utah also earned a 17-15 edge in rebounds during the first half.
MSU worked its advantage to five (41-36) to start the second half, but Utah hit four of its first five shots to pull within a basket at 42-40. A dunk and jump hook by Washburn followed by Martin's third 3-pointer spurred a 7-0 Ute run that gave Utah a 47-44 lead. A 6-2 run capped by an up-and-under move by Mohammed Fall gave MSU a 50-49 lead. The lead changed hands four more times before the Bobcats scored four straight to take a 59-55 edge. The Bobcats would lead by as many as seven (66-59) before the Utes got a late 3-pointer by Watkins and a Farr lay-in. Unfortunately, Montana State hit critical free throws late to secure a 70-64 win. Utah shot 44.8% in the second half, compared to 52.2% for MSU, while the Utes held an 18-17 edge in rebounds.
Montana State hit seven of its first nine field goal attempts in the game and kept its rhythm the rest of the way. Rod Singleton scored a team-high 18 points. Johnson chipped in 15, while Fall turned in 12.
The Utes travel to Paradise Island, Bahamas over the Thanksgiving break for the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament, beginning Thursday, Nov. 24. Utah faces Harvard at 7:30 p.m. MT in the first round. The game will be televised live on HDNet.
