SALT LAKE CITY -
Before a pink-clad crowd of 12,836 that included guest of honor Annabeth Eberle, the Ute gymnasts beat Arizona State 196.525-194.125 on Annabeth Eberle Breast Cancer Awareness night. Eberle, a 27-year-old breast cancer survivor and an eight-time All-American for Utah from 2002-05, received a standing ovation when she awarded the team trophy after the win.
"It was special for me," said Ute coach Greg Marsden after his third-ranked team improved to 4-1 with the victory. "Annabeth was such an important part of our program as a competitor and she is someone who has stayed involved. She still lives in Salt Lake City and comes up to the gym periodically. It was devastating when she called to tell us about what was going on and to live through that experience with her."
The current Utes did the three-time Utah MVP proud. Freshman Corrie Lothrop won her second all-around of the season with a personal-best 39.425, and also won beam with a season-high 9.875. Other Ute victors included freshman Victoria Shanley on vault (9.875) and junior Stephanie McAllister on bars (9.90). McAllister placed second in the all-around with a 39.300.
It was the best meet of the season for Lothrop, a 2008 U.S. Olympic alternate, who according to Marsden improves each week. "Corrie was out of competition for almost two years coming back from a ruptured achilles. Despite all of her experience, she was pretty nervous (early in the season). Each week you can see her relax and compete with more confidence."
The Utes set the tone right out of the shoot with an exceptional vault set that received a 49.225 even without the nation's leading vaulter in the lineup (senior Kyndal Robarts is out for several weeks or more with a knee injury). Utah's first five vaults were performed by freshmen before junior McAllister closed the set with a 9.85.
Freshman Shanley seems a lock for a starting job on the event after her second 9.875 vault in as many meets. The freshman replaced senior Jacquelyn Johnson, who has missed the last two meets with concussion symptoms. Johnson could have returned to the lineup tonight, but the coaches held her out since she has not trained in two weeks.
About the fast start on vault, Marsden said, "It sets the pace. You start the snowball down the hill and it keeps getting bigger. That's what you want to do--have a great first event and then build on it. We did that until we let it get away from us a little on floor."
Up 49.225-48.875 after the vault, Utah's lead kept growing as the meet advanced. Bolstered by the best bar score of the season--a 49.275--Utah led 98.500-97.700 after two rotations. Lothrop (9.875) and McAllister (9.90) were the high scorers of the night on the event and McAllister earned her second bar win of the season.
On beam, Fumina Kobayshi led off a 49.100 set with a career-best 9.825. All six Utes hit their routines solidly and Lothrop won the event with a career-best 9.875 score. Utah led by a point (147.600-146.550) going into floor.
Two steps out of bounds and other small deductions kept Utah below a 49.000 on the floor, but the meet was out of reach by then. Freshman Lia Del Priore led off the set with a career-high 9.825.
