STOWE, Vt. - Behind a second-place finish in the women's 15k classical race by senior Maria Graefnings, the University of Utah ski team improved to second place in the team standings of the NCAA Championships at the Trapp Family Resort. Utah now has a total of 562.5 points and trails first-place Colorado by 84.5 points.
In the day's nordic event, the Ute women totaled the most points (116) in the 15k classical, while the Utah men were third in the 20k classical with 93 points.
For Utah skiers earned All-American honors in the day's events, including Graefnings, Miles Havlick, Didrik Smith and Zoe Roy. The Utes have received 10 All-American performances through the first two days of action at the NCAA Championships.
Graefnings earned All-American honors for the fourth time in her career after crossing the finish line of the women's 15k classical race in 53:37.5, only 4.2 seconds behind Colorado's Eliska Hajkova. Graefnings won the NCAA title in the 5k freestyle yesterday and finished on the podium 11 times in 12 races this season for the Utes.
Roy was awarded All-American honors for the first time in her career after posting a fourth-place finish, which was best finish ever at the NCAA Championships, with a time of 54:17.5. Roy placed among the top four in four competitions this season.
Marta Larsen took 12th place in a time of 55:15.8, which was a 17-place improvement from her finish in Wednesday's freestyle race.
Smith took fifth with a time of 1:05:39.7 that earned him All-American honors for the second time this meet as well as in his career. Including a sixth-place effort in yesterday's 10k freestyle, he has placed in the top 10 in six of the 10 meets in which he has competed in this season.
Havlick, a sophomore from Boulder, Colo., followed Smith in sixth place with a time of 1:05:53.6. Today's effort capped an impressive performance by Havlick in both nordic races at the NCAA Championships. In yesterday's 10k freestyle race, he turned in a podium finish with a third-place effort after crossing the finish line in 26:11.8. He is now a three-time All-American honors two times in his career after finishing eighth in the 10k free at the 2010 NCAA meet.
Tom Smith placed 23rd with a time of 1:08.01.6 for his 10th top-25 finish this season. He made up ground over the second half of the race as well, recovering from 33rd place after the first loop to improve 10 spots to 23rd.
Dartmouth is in third place entering tomorrow's final day of competition (500 points), while fellow Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association members New Mexico (fourth, 492 points), Denver (sixth, 409 points), Alaska-Anchorage (seventh, 408.5 points) and Montana State (ninth, 190 points) are also in the top 10 of the team standings.
The NCAA Championships will conclude tomorrow with the men's and women's slalom races at the Stowe Mountain Resort. The men's first run will be at 7 a.m. MT, followed by the women's first run at 8:15. Second runs follow at 10:15 (men) and 11:30 (women). A flower ceremony will follow each event, and the awards presentation is set for 2 p.m. Follow all of tomorrow's action at ncaa.com.
