COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman center fielder Tara Glover was 5-for-8 at the plate as the University of Utah softball team set a new school record for runs in a single game after defeating Hampton, 22-1, Saturday at the University of Maryland's Round Robin at Robert E. Taylor Field. In the second game of the day, the Utes lost to Maryland, 6-0,
The previous Utah school record for runs scored was 18 against Southern Utah on May 7, 1996.
Utah (12-14) hit .340 as a team on the day and held its opponents to a .298 mark and outhit their opponents 18. Glover's five-hit effort included a triple, three RBI and two runs scored, while Taylor Austin was credited with four RBI. Freshman pitcher Naomi Amu allowed only two earned runs on eight hits in eight innings on the mound to go with 13 strikeouts.
Utah def. Hampton, 22-1
Utah scored at least three runs in its first four at-bats as it pushed established a new school record with 22 runs on 15 hits against the Pirates. Glover had three hits and three RBI and three other Utes (Sandi Bowles, Whitney Holm and Austin) also had multi-hit performances.
On the mound, Amu picked up the win and improved to 3-4 this season after going 3.0 innings and did not allow a run and only one hit with seven strikeouts. Joni Cook finished up the game by going the final 2.0 innings. She allowed only one run on three hits as well as three strikeouts.
The Utes put eight runs on the board in the first inning as Glover led off with a triple to right-center field. Chalese Fankhauser then drew a walk and stole second base before Tia Palauni hit a two-run single up the middle of the Hampton defense. Palauni would score on a wild pitch before Whitney Holm hit an RBI single, Kelsi Hoopiiaina hit an RBI double down the left-field line. Austin singled to left field for two more runs then later scored on an error by Hampton's pitcher.
Utah poured on three more runs in the second inning thanks to four errors by the Hampton defense.
The Utes tacked on three more in the third frame that included another RBI single by Holm before a two-run single to center field by pinch hitter Brittany Parker.
Utah piled on eight more scores in its fourth at-bat to give the Utes a 22-0 edge. Hampton got on the board in the fifth that began with a double to left-center field then the Pirates were able to push the run across with a ground ball to the shortstop.
Maryland def. Utah, 6-0
Glover had two more hits in three at-bats, but unfortunately Fankhauser was the only other Ute to record a hit for the Utes.
Maryland scored four of its six runs in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded, the Terrapins came up with a two-RBI single up the middle of the Ute defense. UM followed that up with a two-run double to left field to push across two more runs. The Terps added their final two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Generra Nielson endured the loss after yielding four earned runs on three hits and dropped to 9-10 this season. Amu threw the final five frames for the Utes. She allowed two earned runs on seven hits and registered six strikeouts.
The Utes conclude the Maryland Round Robin tomorrow against Princeton at 10 a.m. ET.
