STOWE, Vt. - The Utes earned 14 different All-American honors and the University of Utah ski team finished second at the NCAA Championships. Utah combined for a total of 750.5 points to earn second place at the national meet, finishing behind eventual national champion Colorado (831.0 points).
"I am pleased with our performance and extremely satisfied with the overall second-place NCAA finish," Utah Director of Skiing Kevin Sweeney said. "We demonstrated some great team skiing and put down the results when and where we needed to give the title run a shot. Consistency in every discipline has been our trademark this year and it proved to serve us well here at the championships. It was a super team effort all around."
Utah also took second in several secondary team score categories, such as men's team scoring (360 pts.), women's team scoring (390.5 pts.), alpine point leaders (350.5 pts.) and nordic point leaders (400 pts.).
Women's Nordic
Utah took second in the women's nordic competition with 206 points, led by Maria Graefnings, who won the NCAA 5k freestyle title for the first time in her career with a time of 13:51.9. After crossing the finish line of the women's 15k classical race in 53:37.5, only 4.2 seconds behind Colorado's Eliska Hajkova, she claimed second place for the fourth All-American honor of her career. She finished on the podium 11 times in 12 races this season for the Utes.
Zoe Roy was awarded All-American honors for the first time in her career after posting a fourth-place finish in the 15k classical race, which was her best finish ever at the NCAA Championships, with a time of 54:17.5. She joined Graefnings in the top 15 of the 5k freestyle with an 11th-place effort in 14:54.8. This was the fourth time Roy has competed in the NCAA Championships and she placed among the top four in four competitions this season.
Marta Larsen took 12th place in a time of 55:15.8 in the 15k classical, which was a 17-place improvement from her finish in the 5k freestyle race where she finished 29th at a time of 15:27.0.
Men's Nordic
The men's nordic team was second with 194 points, paced by Miles Havlick, who turned in a podium finish with a third-place effort after crossing the finish line in 26:11.8 in the 10k classical. He then became a three-time All-American after finishing sixth in the 10k freestyle (1:05.53.6).
Didrik Smith took fifth in the 20k freestyle with a time of 1:05:39.7 that earned him All-American honors for the second time this meet as well as in his career. Including a sixth-place effort in yesterday's 10k freestyle, Smith placed in the top 10 in six of the 10 meets in which he competed in this season.
Tom Smith followed in 20th place at a time of 27:15.4 in the 10k classical during his first career race at the NCAA Championships. He then placed 23rd in the 20k freestyle with a time of 1:08.01.6 for his 10th top-25 finish this season.
Women's Alpine
Utah's women's alpine squad accumulated 184.5 points and took third place. In her first meet at the NCAA Championships, Tii-Maria Romar posted a pair of All-American performances. Romar posted a team-best sixth-place finish in the women's giant slalom race at 2:06.98 and was fifth in the individual standings of the women's slalom after turning in a time of 1:56.46.
Eva Huckova captured All-American status for the sixth time in her career after finishing immediately behind Romar with a sixth-place effort in the women's slalom at a time of 1:57.02.
Anna Kocken earned All-American honors in her second career race at the NCAA Championships, the slalom. Kocken joined her teammates in the top 10 with a ninth-place time of 1:57.96 to give her All-American recognition for the first time in her career. She registered a 27th-place finish at a time of 2:10.06 in the giant slalom during her NCAA Championships debut.
Men's Alpine
The Ute men's alpine competitors turned in 166 points, which stood second in the meet. Torjus Krogdahl earned All-American status in both men's alpine events for the Utes and is now a four-time All-American over his career. Krogdahl took fifth in the men's slalom competition after crossing the finish line in 1:42.70 and posted a seventh-place effort in the men's GS after turning in a time of 2:03.50.
Ryan Wilson claimed third place in the men's giant slalom race as he paced the Utes with a time of 2:02.95. He earned the first All-American recognition of his career and placed on the podium for the third time this season in giant slalom events during his first competition at the NCAA meet.
Jeremy Elliot rounded out Utah's effort in the men's GS by placing 34th in a time of 4:24.63.
Four other Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association members joined Utah and Colorado in the top 10 of the final team standings, including New Mexico (fourth, 632 points), Denver (fifth, 592 points), Alaska Anchorage (seventh, 488.5 points) and Montana State (10th, 230 points).
