Kyndal Robarts, a senior All-American on the Utah gymnastics team, has decided to apply for a medical hardship extension from the NCAA. Robarts, who injured her knee in warm-ups prior to Utah's third meet of the season at Nebraska on Jan. 22, initially hoped to return for the postseason.
"While her knee has improved significantly and we don't anticipate any long term problems, it is still not at 100 percent," said Utah coach Greg Marsden. "I think we've run out of time with regard to her return this season. While it is disappointing for this year's team, the thought of having Kyndal return next season is exciting. It will be helpful to have her leadership and experience on a team that will be made up primarily of freshmen and sophomores. Next year's team just got a lot stronger."
Robarts, a two-time first-team All-American and Utah's 2010 MVP, won both of her vault competitions this season and was the nation's top-ranked vaulter when she was injured. Her 39.60 career all-around high, set last year as a junior, is the best by any current Ute gymnast.
