April 27, 2011
FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Utah's Anastasia Putilina has been named the 2010-11 Mountain West Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year, the league office announced Wednesday. Joining Putilina on the all-conference singles team are senior Evgenia Kryuchkova and freshman Sarah Pham. Sophomore Paige Miles also received an all-MWC nod in doubles for her efforts with Putilina. This is the first time since joining the MWC that Utah has placed four players on the all-conference team.
"I'm very proud of all these young women and I only hope that [assistant coach] Ruth Ann [Allen] and I were able to help them in earning these awards," said head coach Mat Iandolo.
Putilina has been named all-MWC in all three years of her career, being honored in singles (three times) and doubles (two times). The junior from Belgorood, Russia, went 6-1 at the No. 1 singles position in regular-season conference play. Putilina also received MWC Player of the Week honors three times this season, for the weeks of Feb. 16, March 30, and April 20. Putilina is the first Ute to earn the conference Player of the Year award since Utah joined the MWC.
"[Anastasia] has accomplished a great deal in her three years here," Iandolo stated. "I see her as the leader of our team because of her ability to play and compete at the highest levels. Not only has she had some great wins, but also some very, very close losses to a couple of the top-5 ranked players. I expect her to be a top-20 player next year."
Kryuchkova earns the third all-MWC honor of her career, and second consecutively. She compiled a 4-3 conference record, primarily at the No. 2 singles spot, and went 12-9 overall in dual-matches. The Zhukovsky, Russia, native earned MWC Player of the Week twice this season, for the weeks of Jan. 9 and April 6. Kryuchkova's first all-conference honor came in 2008 as she was voted the MWC Freshman of the Year.
"It's a great honor for Evgenia to have earned all-conference three times, including Freshman of the year in 2008," said Iandolo. "It says a lot about how far she has come and how much she has contributed to the team during her time here."
Pham, went a perfect 8-0 in conference singles action, primarily from the No. 3 and No. 4 positions. The Parrish, Fla., native is the third freshman to earn all-MWC honors under Iandolo, following in the footsteps of Kryuchkova and Putilina. Pham has won nine consecutive singles matches and is 16-5 overall in dual-match singles action. She is the reigning MWC Player of the Week.
"What can I say, Sarah was 8-0 in conference play and made a huge impact as a freshman," Iandolo stated. "I see her becoming a top-100 player in the next year and look forward to coaching her for her entire career."
Putilina and Miles earned their second consecutive all-MWC award in doubles, amassing a 6-1 record against MWC opponents at the No.1 position. The Ute duo finished the regular season with an overall dual-match doubles record of 13-7.
"When I recruited Paige I knew she was going to be one of the best doubles players in the conference if not also at the national level," said Iandolo. "She has shown that so far and is a great compliment to Anastasia."
