SALT LAKE CITY - After capturing the slalom title at the NCAA West Region/RMISA Championships, senior Tii-Maria Romar was named the RMISA's Women's Alpine MVP for the 2012 season.
"Tii-Maria has been superb this season in both slalom and giant slalom," Utah Director of Skiing Kevin Sweeney said. "It is fantastic to see her scoring so well and being a true team leader. Congratulations for this accomplishment are certainly in order."
Romar earned 525 out of a possible 550 points in the RMISA's MVP standings. Due to race conditions in Alaska, an 11th race was put into the calculation. She finished in the top 10 in all 11 regular season races with top-four finishes in 10 of the 11 races. Romar had three wins and was equally impressive in both disciplines as she won one slalom and two GS races. She also earned two second places, one third place and four fourth-place finishes in those 10 races. Romar appeared on the podium a total of six times season.
"Julie [Bordeau] and I were going head to head with each other in a very tight race for the title throughout the regular season," Romar said. "It just added to the excitement that my closest competitor was also a teammate. Being so close to winning the title last year made it even more exciting that I won it this season during my last year of college ski racing. Winning the MVP is always a rewarding thing for an individual athlete, as it shows consistency in both disciplines throughout the whole season."
A native of Mustasaari, Finland, Romar is in her second season on the RMISA circuit and was a first-team All-RMISA selection last season. Prior to joining the Utes, Romar skied for the Finnish National A Team for a decade.
Romar has won six races over her career and has been on the podium 12 times during her two seasons with the Utes.
Calculated using the NCAA Qualification points earned all season, each skier can earn a maximum of 50 points per race. Rules indicate that the one run for the women can count as a result for RMISA purposes. Because of that, the women had 11 races with six GS and five slalom results.
The NCAA Championships will be held Mar. 7-10 in Bozeman, Mont. Check out utahutes.com for all the details.
