SALT LAKE CITY - Utah men's basketball dominated its exhibition contest against Saint Martin's this evening, winning convincingly 91-54. Jordan Loveridge paced four players in double figures with 21 points and added six rebounds along with three assists.
"I think we did ok tonight," head coach Larry Krystkowiak said. "This was a good barometer of where we stand. Obviously it's always great to play in front of a nice crowd. This way we get the butterflies out. But there were mistakes which our guys will learn from and one of them, obviously, is the emphasis on the rule change. The fouling is something that will affect depth going forward, for all teams."
"I thought we did well and everyone seems to grasp their role," Loveridge said. "We hit some shots tonight and got some easy buckets. Obviously, the one thing we need to work on is getting better defensively."
Delon Wright also impressed for the Utes, scoring 13 points, grabbing eight rebounds and eight assists. Dakarai Tucker and freshman Parker Van Dyke each added 12 points and four rebounds as Utah shot 53 percent , was a +19 on the glass and went to the free-throw line 45 times.
"I wasn't surprised by anything out there this evening," Krystkowiak said. "We saw glimpses of what Jordan can do on both ends of the court. Delon almost had a triple-double with his stat line and Parker made some really nice plays at the end. I've been around these guys for a while so I knew they were capable of coming out and playing well."
Renan Lenz tied for the team lead with eight rebounds to go along with nine points. Sophomore Brandon Taylor chipped in with nine points and Ahmad Fields, another freshman, came off the bench to tally eight.
Utah led from the tip as Dakarai Tucker drained a baseline three-pointer to get the Utes up and running. The home side used a 7-0 run to open up a double-digit lead on a three-pointer by Loveridge at the 13:43 mark.
Consecutive three-pointers by Will Bond cut the deficit to two but Brandon Taylor answered with a jumper for the Utes. That propelled Utah on a 10-1 run that culminated with a pretty finger-roll from Delon Wright which made the score 27-16 at the 7:46 mark.
With the score 29-21, the Utes went on a 12-0 run and eventually went into the locker room at halftime with a 43-25 lead. Wright and Loveridge had already reached double figures by the break as Utah held SMU to 33 percent shooting. The Utes dominated the second half as well, shooting 59 percent and knocking down six three-pointers.
"We're looking for consistency," Krystkowiak added. "We have young players so there are going to be ups and downs. Defensively, if you get out and guard, you're going to see the floor. If we are able to get stops and fight through screens, we will get better looks offensively."
Utah has its regular-season opener next Friday at the Jon M. Huntsman Center against Evergreen State College at 6 p.m. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network and will be followed by the women's team against Denver.
