SALT LAKE CITY - Delon Wright scored 17 points on 8-of-8 shooting while Jordan Loveridge added 15 points and matched his career-high with 15 rebounds as Utah pulled away from Grand Canyon for a 79-54 victory to open the Global Sports Hoops Showcase on Thursday night.
Parker Van Dyke matched a career-high with 12 points off the bench for the Utes (3-0) and Dallin Bachynski grabbed 10 rebounds during only 12 minutes in his first action of the season.
"This was the first time that Dallin has been able to practice this season," Head Coach Larry Krystkowiak said. "He went after it like a man possessed. We told him when he gets into the game, he just needs to bring energy, get rebounds, and provide a defensive presence. Parker is ahead of the curve. His leadership skills are evident because he is such a good communicator on the defensive end."
Utah owned Grand Canyon on the glass holding a 49-33 edge on rebounds. This created a 42-28 advantage in points in the paint for the home team. The Utes also produced 20 points off 12 Grand Canyon turnovers and outscored the Antelopes 17-2 in transition.
"Forty-nine rebounds, that is something we have to continue to do," Krystkowiak added. "Everyone is committed on the defensive glass and that provides an exclamation point on getting stops. Obviously this has been a focal point for us and we even got a couple offensive rebounds off free throws tonight."
Utah opened with an 11-0 run as the Antelopes missed seven straight shots and did not get their first basket until five minutes into the game. They shot only 28 percent from the field and 10 percent from 3-point range before halftime.
Grand Canyon whittled the lead down to six when Jeremy Adams scored a layup to cut Utah's lead to 15-9. But that brief comeback simply set the stage for another offensive spurt by the Utes. Dakarai Tucker finished off another 11-0 run with back-to-back 3-pointers, giving the Utes a 30-12 lead with 5:43 remaining before halftime.
Out of the halftime break, Grand Canyon rallied within 12 points, making it 40-28 on a layup from Killian Larson. However, Utah did not let the Antelopes get any closer.
Jeremy Olsen scored layups on back-to-back possessions to spark a 13-2 run and Wright finished off a traditional a three-point play to give Utah a 53-30 lead with 12 minutes left in the game.
"Credit to Grand Canyon," sophomore Jordan Loveridge said. "They played great defense and were the most athletic team we have played so far. We want to keep the pedal down. We know if we turn it over on offense, we can get it back by playing solid defense."
Demetrius Walker had 16 points and Jerome Garrison added 12 to lead the Antelopes, who are still searching for their first win over a Division I opponent. Grand Canyon (1-3) joined the WAC this season after competing in the Pac West - an NCAA Division II conference - last season.
The Global Sports Hoops Showcase continues tomorrow with Utah hosting Lamar at 7 p.m. Grand Canyon and Savannah State meet in the evening's first contest at 4 p.m.
