SALT LAKE CITY - Right-fielder Sandi Fawson went 2-for-2 with an RBI at the plate on Senior Day, but Utah could not avoid a 12-3 loss to No. 13/12 Washington in five innings to cap the regular-season home finale at Utah Softball Stadium.
Utah (24-29-1, 7-17 Pac-12) totaled six hits on the day as Fawson led the way with a 2-for-2 day at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. This was the Herriman, Utah native's first multi-hit effort of the season.
Sophomore left fielder Kate Dickman drove in two runs and has now driven in 36 RBI this year and 57 over her career.
Junior center fielder Chalese Fankhauser had two hits in three at-bats with a run scored. The South Jordan, Utah native now has
Junior Naomi Amu made her 34th appearance of the season, but saw her record drop to 7-10 this season.
The Huskies put three runs on the scoreboard in the first frame, but Fankhauser led off the game with a triple to right field, her sixth triple of the year. Hoopiiaina then drew a walk to put Ute runners on the corners before Dickman rolled an RBI ground ball to second base to plate Utah's first score of the contest and make it a 3-1 game.
UW scored six more times in its half of the second to build a 9-1 advantage before senior first baseman Katelyn Elliott and freshman catcher Shelby Pacheco drew back-to-back one-out walk in Utah's half of the inning and Fawson connected on a base hit to left field for her first RBI of the season and the 10th of her career to bring the game to a 9-2 score.
Washington's Kaitlin Inglesby tagged a three-run homer over the left-field fence in the Huskies' third frame.
The Utes got one run back in the bottom of the fourth as Dickman connected on an RBI single back to the Husky pitcher to plate Fawson and set the final margin at 12-3.
No. 13/12 Washington (36-14, 14-7 Pac-12) had Bryana Walker on the mound, who picked up the win to improve to 14-7 on the year, after allowing three earned runs on six hits in 5.0 innings.
The Utes conclude their regular season next Saturday at BYU. First pitch from Miller Park is set for 1:30 p.m. MT.
