SALT LAKE CITY--
Georgia Dabritz won two events and the all-around to lead Utah to a 196.675 score and a victory over Southern Utah (195.500), Boise State (194.525) and UC Davis (193.950) before a Huntsman Center crowd of 14,254.
Dabritz won bars (9.925) and floor (9.95), and her 39.60 all-around score led a 1-2-3 Ute all-around sweep. Behind her were Tory Wilson (39.300) and Corrie Lothrop (39.175).
Dabritz, a three-event specialist last season who made the beam and all-around lineup just twice in 2014, scored a 9.85 on the beam as a last-minute replacement for Kailah Delaney.
"It was fun for me to go all-around. I haven't done it for awhile. While I want to go all-around, I can't expect to do it every meet," said Dabritz.
Coach Greg Marsden was not so sure about that statement. "If Georgia can perform night in and night out like that on beam, she is a good as any all-arounder in the country."
He was more reserved in commenting on the team's overall performance. "Similar to last week, we did some things very well, but we can be better on every event. I expect to be better on every event. They should expect to be better on every event. We will be better on every event."
His frustrations started on the first rotation, when only Dabritz (9.875) and Kari Lee (9.875) stuck their vault landings in a 49.125 showing. When asked about Utah's low scores on the vault--not a single Ute scored a 9.90, something that happened just once all last season--Marsden said, "We had deductions and the judges took them. We need to compete our routines in meets the way we are practicing in the gym."
The Utes improved to a 49.225 on bars on their next event, aided by Dabritz's winning 9.925 score and a 9.875 from both Kassandra Lopez and Lothrop.
A 49.075 beam score put the Utes a full point up on its closest competitor--Southern Utah--heading into the final rotation. Dabritz's 9.85 score from the No. 2 position was Utah's best beam score of the night and earned her second place overall.
On floor, Dabritz brought the crowd to its feet with an exquisite routine that earned a 10.0 from one judge and a 9.95 combined score.
"We need to do a better job of owning our gymnastics if we want to succeed in our Pac-12 schedule," Marsden told the team in the locker room after the meet. The Utes will get their first chance at taking ownership next Friday when they host UCLA in the annual Blackout meet.
