THIS WEEK IN UTAH GYMNASTICS
The No. 6-ranked Utah gymnastics team (0-0, 0-0 Pac-12) opens its 2015 season on Friday, Jan. 9 against in-state rival Brigham Young (0-0) in Provo. The annual Deseret Duel starts at 7 p.m. in the Marriott Center and will be televised live on BYUtv. Live scores and commentary will be available at UtahUtes.com.
QUICK STICKS
Utah gymnastics and head coach Greg Marsden celebrate their 40th anniversary this season. Marsden, the sport's winningest coach (1,018-205-7), became its first 1,000-win coach last year ... Utah gymnastics season tickets for 2015 were at 6,924 to start the week, which sets a new school record. The old season ticket mark of 6,900 was set last year when Utah gymnastics went on to lead all NCAA women's sports in average attendance (14,376). Tickets are on sale at utahtickets.com and by calling 801-581-UTIX ... Utah, the defending Pac-12 champion, was picked to win the 2015 Pac-12 gymnastics title in the preseason coaches' poll. It marks the first time in Utah's four years of Pac-12 membership that the Utes have been projected to win the title ... Friday's meet at BYU is worth three points in the Deseret First Duel rivalry series, which Utah currently leads 8-6 (Utah won soccer and men's basketball, while BYU won volleyball and women's basketball).
IN THE RANKINGS
Utah starts the season ranked No. 6 in the preseason coaches' poll. Utah has earned a preseason top-six rank all 25 years of the poll's existence (began in 1991). Nine of Utah's 2015 opponents are in the preseason top 25: No. 5 UCLA, No. 7 Georgia, No. 8 Michigan, No. 10 Stanford, No. 11 Oregon State, No. 14 California, No. 19 Boise State, No. 21 Arizona and No. 24 Washington. Utah returns nine letterwinners and six All-Americans from last year's Pac-12 champion and seventh-place NCAA team ... All four members of Utah's senior class are All-Americans and three are Pac-12 champions:
Tory Wilson was the 2014 Pac-12 all-around champion and Pac-12 Gymnast of the Year,
Georgia Dabritz (the 2014 Pac-12 Specialist of the Year) is a four-time Pac-12 individual event champion and
Corrie Lothrop was the 2012 Pac-12 all-around champion ... Utah's freshman class consists of Junior Olympic champions

Samantha Partyka and Maddie Stover, as well as
Tiffani Lewis.

Seniors
Corrie Lothrop,
Georgia Dabritz and
Tory Wilson were elected team captains. It is Lothrop's third season as a co-captain and the first year for Dabritz and Wilson ... Sophomore
Baely Rowe is projected to make her all-around debut this Friday. Rowe, who competed only on beam as a freshman last year, will be joined in the all-around lineup by Lothrop and Wilson. It will mark Lothrop's first all-around appearance since she tore her Achilles in 2013 ... Two freshmen are scheduled to start against BYU:
Kari Lee on vault, beam and floor and
Maddy Stover on beam. Two other freshmen are listed as alternates--
Tiffani Lewis (vault, floor) and
Samantha Partyka (beam) ... Returning to action after missing all of last season with an Achilles tear is redshirt junior
Kassandra Lopez. Lopez will compete on bars this Friday and is also training on beam ... Senior All-American
Becky Tutka will miss Friday's meet with a wrist injury. Tutka hopes to return by the third meet (UCLA on Jan. 23).
